About The Little Community (TLC) Theater

One of the issues facing our community is the growing trend of youth offenders appearing in Juvenile Court.  There are many at-risk youth that are heading toward the criminal court system if intervention is not made.  A contributing factor to this problem is the fact that, with the exception of sports, there are not very many activities for youth - outside of school.  Even at that, participating in school sports can be expensive which may discourage some youth from becoming involved. 

Our youth are our future but they are also key contributors to our society now.  The County Mayor's Office has applied for a Department of Justice grant, taking a new approach in mentoring and intervention.  The creation of The Little Community (TLC) Theater will provide at-risk youth with a structured, mentored activity while learning about the arts.  There are so many different aspects of play production that just about any of the youth's interests can be accommodated.  We are hopeful that they will develop an interest in the arts while developing skills and positive character traits such as teamwork and accountability.  Each session will begin with an interactive seminar featuring a  representative from one of the various social organizations and or law officials.  Special instructors will volunteer their time to teach youth special skills such as quilting, arts, and crafts, dance, video production, publicity, and journalism. 

The drawback is that the odds are more likely that a grant will not be awarded than those that will be.  However, I believe with the community pulling together, that we can still establish TLC Theater.  With groups such as the Campbell County Anti-Drug Coalition, the Arts Council, and the Culture Coalition, there is much wisdom and talent to draw upon.  Let's work with our youth and make a positive difference in their lives.
