Jellico High School’s football team squandered enough scoring opportunities Friday night to win by two touchdowns.
Instead, the Blue Devils ended up losing 12-6 to North Greene, a team they defeated last season for one of their two victories of 2009.
Tyler Brummett caught a 28-yard touchdown pass to cap a 60-yard opening drive for Jellico (0-2 overall), but the Blue Devils failed on the conversion attempt.
Jellico had the ball three more times inside the Huskies’ 30-yard line during the first half only to come away empty-handed.
“We dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone,” said Jellico coach Danny Oakes.
“I think that would’ve changed the complexion of the game.
“We had every opportunity to put points on the board, and we let North Greene hang around. You just can’t do that and expect to win a football game.”
The Huskies scored a touchdown late in the second quarter to tie the game 6-6 going to halftime.
Neither team took control during the second half.
The game appeared headed to overtime until North Greene took advantage of a Jellico mistake to score the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils were not able to get off a punt, which allowed the Huskies to set up shop on the Jellico 40-yard line.
“That was all the difference in the game. Our lack of offensive execution was our Achilles heel,” said Coach Oakes.
Jellico finished the game with 252 yards of total offense.
Rushing leaders for the Blue Devils were Ryan Irwin with 46 yards and Devin Oakes with 30.
Devin Oakes also had a big game on defense with a team-high 10 tackles from his defensive tackle position.
Gabe Mitchell, Brummett and Irwin each made half a dozen stops for the Blue Devils. Craig Payne had five tackles.
The Blue Devils have a week off to regroup before hosting The King’s Academy on Sept. 10.
