Jellico’s boys marched into the District 2-A Tournament championship game with an 83-60 rout of Washburn during Saturday’s semifinal round at Rutledge.
Ben Mitchell led all scorers with 26 points, including six 3-pointers.
Jesse Chambers was right behind Mitchell with 24 points, 11 of which he scored during a first-quarter blitz.
Thomas Ridenour also hit double figures with 15 of his 17 points for the Blue Devils coming in the second half.
“Jesse played pretty well; Ben played pretty well; and, in the second half, Thomas was a big factor,” said Jellico coach Mike Reynolds.
“I didn’t think they could play at the pace we were, and that turned out to be a big factor.
“In the first half, we didn’t rebound the ball very well. But we got after it in the second half.”
The Blue Devils improved their record to 19-8 overall with the victory.
Jellico led 25-24 at the end of a high-scoring first quarter. By halftime, though, the Pirates had the game tied 35-35.
Ridenour got rolling in the second half and slammed home a third-quarter dunk that seemed to light a fire under the Blue Devils.
Jellico went up by 12 points before Washburn cut it to 57-51 at the third quarter break.
The Blue Devils finally put the Pirates away with 26 points in the fourth quarter.
Rounding out the scoring for Jellico was Darius Marlow with five points; Dustin Smiddy wth three; Michael Smith, Jeremiah Thompson, Brent Ayers and Matt Ayers two each.
The Blue Devils went 15-of-24 at the charity stripe and also hit half a dozen three-pointers during the game.
Josh Hixon and Lucas Brooks, the Pirates’ two all-district players, scored 20 and 11 points, respectively.
