Jellico High School’s boys got the top prize and top billing in this week’s District 4-A Basketball Tournament at Wartburg.

Junior forward Cody Malicoat was selected boy’s player of the year after leading the Blue Devils to a No. 1 seeding. Jellico got a first-round bye and will open tournament play on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the Oneida/Oakdale winner. The game will be broadcast live on the radio at WLAF 1450 AM and on the Internet at www.1450wlaf.com.

WLAF will continue to broadcast Jellico basketball games throughout the remainder of the postseason tournaments. The boy’s district championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m., immediately following the consolation contest.

Malicoat averaged nearly 30 points a game for the Blue Devils (11-1 district, 16-12 overall) during the last half of the regular season. He was the only Jellico player named first-team all-district. Brent Ayers was named to the second-team, while Michael Smith, Dustin Smiddy and Lee England were honorable mention candidates.

Jason Hill of Coalfield was boy’s coach of the year.

Lady Blue Devils Ashley Gulley and Kayla Bolton received honorable mention status on the girl’s all-district team. Girl’s co-players of the year were Lindsey Kilby from Oakdale and Alex Bond from Oneida.

Oakdale’s Fred Snow was named girl’s coach of the year. The girl’s championship game is set for 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21.
