Students on the north side of the county have a downed tree to thank for an abbreviated school day.
Dr. Michael Martin, director of schools, was notified on Tuesday morning that a TVA transmission line was taken down by a tree in the Jellico area.
Martin was told by officials that the process to restore power could take anywhere from two to six hours. As a result, the director made the decision to dismiss the affected schools which include Jellico High School, Jellico Elementary School, Elk Valley Elementary School, White Oak Elementary School and Wynn Elementary School.
“It was just too much of a gamble to wait and see how soon crews would be able to get the electricity up and running again,” Martin said of his decision to cancel classes at these school.
Although school is dismissing early lunch will be served.
