Sunday afternoon, Campbell County will participate in Stand in the Gap. Stand in the Gap is a tri-state event that will involve nine counties at six locations. At each location, people will gather to seek God through prayer.
“The purpose of the Stand in the Gap event is for our community to come together and cry out to God in repentance,” said Mark Partin, pastor of Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. “It’s to call out to God, not just because we want Him to fix our problems, but because we’re desperate for Him. We’ve got to come to a point of desperation as a people.”
Members from Indiana Avenue Baptist Church participated in the Stand in the Gap event at Cumberland Gap National Historic Park last year, and have been involved in planning this year’s event.
The Stand in the Gap Coalition, who has organized the event, sees a need for the Federal Drug Task Force Assistance to increase enforcement and sentencing, elevate treatment opportunities, educate youth and adults about dangers of drugs, reduce their availability and to unify believers across denominational lines.
While Campbell County needs God to fix social problems, such as addiction and crime, the main purpose of the event is to seek God, Partin said.
“It’s an ongoing thing (when) you seek the Father,” Partin said.
Partin hopes Stand in the Gap will unite churches across Campbell County and bridge denominational gaps so people can continue seeking God in prayer on a continual basis.
It isn’t about a one-time event, Partin said.
“If all we do is meet on Nov. 4, we’ve missed it,” Partin said.
At 7 p.m. every Tuesday night, local churches from every denomination gather at West LaFollette Community center to pray. Partin hopes Stand in the Gap will lead more people to these meetings.
Campbell County is one of nine counties, from three states, participating in Stand in the Gap this year. The Stand in the Gap Coalition has organized prayer rallies at five locations, which will all take place at 3 p.m.
Campbell County will meet at Campbell County High School. Hawkins County and Hancock County will meet at City Park in Rogersville, Scott County will meet at the Huntsville Mall, Bell County, Ky. will meet at Bell County High School, Claiborne County, Union County and Lee County, Va. will meet at Gose Park and Fentress County will hold a prayer rally in Jamestown at the Fentress County Court House.
