CCHS teams swept in district opener

Campbell County High School’s varsity basketball teams got swept Tuesday night by visiting Clinton in their District 3-AAA opener.


The Lady Dragons surprised the CCHS girls with a 69-65 win.

Post player Cody Houck (25 pts.), point guard Amber Taylor (20 pts.) and wing Jasmine Fuqua (18 pts.) inflicted most of the damage for Clinton, which made 13-of-17 free throws.

Senior guard Jessica Moore led the Lady Cougars with 24 points but was held scoreless during the fourth quarter.

Candice Seiber (12 pts.) and Kristin Chapman (11 pts.) also scored in double figures for Campbell County.

In the boy’s game, Campbell County got off to a great start but let a 12-4 lead slip away in the second quarter.

Clinton took an eight-point halftime lead and never looked back. The Dragons won, 69-54.

C.J. Alred, who is being recruited by several colleges including Colorado State, led a balanced attack for Clinton with 16 points.

All-state quarterback Darian Stone chipped in 14 points, while big man Spencer McLane added 11.

Sean Chapman led all scorers with 25 points for the Cougars. The 6-foot-8 senior forward also hit four 3-pointers, grabbed nine rebounds, made three steals and blocked three shots.

Cody Malicoat finished with nine.

After giving up their early lead, the Cougars got within two points on a couple of occasions in the second half before Clinton pulled away for a victory.

The Cougars will travel to Cumberland Gap tomorrow (Fri.) night for a boys only (jayvee and varsity) doubleheader.
