Colder weather is here. And while many organizations sponsor drives to ensure those in need have coats suitable for braving the elements, a local parent and child group is taking a different approach.

The Chi Rho Kids group formed by Paradigm Ministries is excited about collecting warm pajamas to help children stay snug during the frigid winter months.

Chi Rho Kids mom Christie Elkins said the idea for the ministry grew from a simple conversation between moms in the group.

“Basically the moms were just talking about how cold it was going to be and how we are always concerned about whether our children were warm enough at night. From there we just thought it would be great to make a way to offer warm pajamas for children whose families may not be able to afford them,” Elkins explained.

According to Elkins Chi Rho Kids and Paradigm Ministries will be collecting new, warm pajamas for children ages birth through five years until the distribution date scheduled for Jan. 27.

Elkins said community support of the ministry will be key to its success.

“We’ve gotten quite a few pairs (of pajamas) already, but would like to have more. We plan to have a one pair per child policy and hand them out on a first come first serve basis,” Elkins said.

Pajama donations can be dropped off at Smart Styles inside Walmart.

Chi Rho Kids meets every Tues. at 3 p.m. Activities include Bible lessons, crafts and occasional outings to the zoo and other child friendly locations.

“It (Chi Rho Kids) is a great way for moms to learn from each other while the children have an opportunity to interact,” Elkins said of the group that welcomes children of all ages.

Chi Rho Kids is a ministry of Paradigm Ministries, which is located at 1327 East Central Avenue in the East Gate Shopping Center.
