A LaFollette man is facing shoplifting charges after allegedly walking out of a local hardware store with merchandise.

On Friday LaFollette Police Officer Jason Marlow was called to Ace Hardware to investigate a shoplifting incident.

Witnesses at the store reported a male had walked out of the business with pipe fittings he had not paid for. After receiving a description of the defendant and vehicle Marlow was able to locate Gary D. Downing, Jr. 31, of 167 Beals Lane traveling on East Beech Street.

The driver of the vehicle told Marlow she had not seen Downing get into the car with any items and gave consent to search, according to Marlow’s report.

During the search Officer Stephen Wallen located the stolen items in a tissue box on the passenger side floor.

When asked for his name and date of birth, Downing allegedly provided officers with a false identity.

Downing was arrested and charged with shoplifting, theft under $500 and criminal impersonation. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 19.
