Over 60 people gathered in the main lobby of St. Mary’s Hospital on Monday offering praise for Dr. Burgin Wood, who celebrated 50 years of service at St. Mary’s.
CEO of St. Mary’s Alan Watson gave an introduction at the surprise reception.
“You have proved to me that your heart is with the patient,” Watson said warmly to Wood. “It is a privilege to call you a friend and colleague.”
Though Watson has worked with Wood for only the past two and a half years, he commented on the rarity of a person’s continued dedication to serve for 50 years.
“In today’s environment it’s unusual to hear of people working 50 years in one profession,” said Watson. “It speaks to his character and dedication to the community he has served for so long.”
Watson then opened the floor to anyone who wanted to speak. The doctors and nurses who have worked closely with Wood over the years were the first to express their amazement at his care. The doctors said he was an example and the nurses called him an inspiration.
“If Dr. Wood said I could move a mountain then I believed I could move a mountain because he said so,” said a fellow colleague.
Campbell County Mayor William Baird addressed the audience with a proclamation in honor of Wood. Baird recounted Wood’s accomplishments over the years, proclaiming November 10, 2008 as the day to remember Wood and his service for the past 50 years.
Though many colleagues expressed their devotion to Wood, many people present were patients that were directly affected by his care and kindness.
A local woman said if not for Woods careful advise her husband may not have survived a heart condition. Both men and woman were overcome with emotion as they addressed Wood and his commitment to the community’s health and well-being.
“It is a surprise, a pleasure and a joy,” said Wood. “This is a wonderful place to be.”
Wood has served the community as a physician for many years, but many who call him their doctor also call him a friend.
“I have so many memories,” said Wood of the past 50 years.
And his comments for the future were, “Everyday is an adventure.”
“I truly believe he has the best interest of people at heart,” said Watson.
