One was a breeze, while the other was a fight to the end.
Jacksboro Middle School’s basketball teams took different roads to victory Monday night during a varsity sweep of visiting Oneida.
The girl’s game went right down to the wire, with the Lady Eagles (6-1 overall) rallying for a 35-32 come-from-behind win. Whitney Williamson hit a 3-pointer to grab the lead for Jacksboro in the final minute. Krista Williams followed Williamson’s trey with a long jump shot to make it a three-point game.
Olivia Brown then alertly grabbed a rebound from a 3-point miss by Oneida to clinch the victory.
Michaela Smith led all scorers with 11 points for the Lady Eagles. Williams added 8 points, followed by Brooke Bane with 7, Williamson 5, Brown and Courtney Charles 2 each.
Jacksboro led 18-16 at halftime before Oneida pulled ahead by 3 at the end of the third quarter. Sydnie Jeffers paced the Lady Indians with 9 points, followed by Shelby Thompson with 8 and Alex Kazee 7.
The Eagles (3-2 overall) left little to chance in the varsity boy’s game. Jacksboro jumped out to a 25-14 halftime lead and never looked back. Darrin Gillenwater and Jesse Sharp pumped in 17 and 14 points, respectively, as the Eagles pounded the Indians, 48-23.
Dylan Clawson chipped in 7 points for Jacksboro, followed by Will Chambers with 5, Gage Lawson and Tyler Loveday 2 each, and Kaine Peel 1. Oneida had only two players score during the game. Andrew Flint led the Indians with 14 points, while Cole Buttram had 9.
In junior varsity boy’s action, Oneida pulled out a 38-31 victory with 18 points from Dalton Chambers. Jacob McGuire scored 7 of his team-high 10 points during a heroic fourth quarter performance for the Eagles. Max Farris added 7 points, followed by Loveday with 6; Jon Paul, Toby Jones, Jared Ray and Colton White with 2 each.
