Halfway to the school-record mark of 16 wins they set a year ago, members of the Jellico High School volleyball team celebrated their second consecutive District 4-A regular season championship Thursday night.
The Lady Blue Devils (4-0 district, 8-5 overall) clinched the title with a 25-9, 25-14 victory over visiting Wartburg.
Jellico has its sights set on returning to the substate round this year with a chance of qualifying for the state tournament. Last year, the Lady Blue Devils made their first substate appearance in school history.
“If we’re ever going to go to state, this would be the year,” said longtime Jellico volleyball coach Barbara Carter.
“We’ve got four really good seniors: Ashley Gulley, Ashley Ouimette, Amber Barton and Kayla Bolton. We expect to go to substate.”
During a match earlier Thursday afternoon, the Lady Blue Devils posted a 25-16, 29-27 triumph over Knoxville Christian School.
Jellico, which also went unbeaten in district play last season, ended up with twice as many league wins this season after Coalfield joined the fray.
“(Coalfield) is pretty good to be a first-year team. They’ve got great athletes,” said Carter.
The District 4-A Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 11 at Wartburg. The regional tournament is set for Oct. 18 at Jellico.
