Juniors Shayla Goins and Courtney Morris combined to score 9 of Campbell County’s final 13 points Tuesday night to carry the Lady Cougars to a 47-44 opening round triumph over rival Anderson County in the District 3-AAA Basketball Tournament at Karns.
The No. 4 seed Lady Cougars advanced to Saturday’s semifinal round to face regular season champion and No. 1 tournament seed Oak Ridge at 4:30 p.m.
The loss eliminated Anderson County from further postseason play this year.
Tuesday night’s quarterfinal game was a re-run of the two regular season meetings between Campbell County and Anderson County. The teams split the two earlier games, with each winning a close contest on the other’s home court.
The Lady Cougars led 29-25 at halftime of the tournament game but, by the end of the third quarter, the Lady Mavericks had the game tied, 34-34.
Goins, a post player, hit a field goal and 3 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Campbell County in the game. Morris, a point guard, also made a pair of clutch baskets down the stretch, the last of which put the Lady Cougars ahead for good.
Goins led Campbell County with 12 points, followed by Morris with 11, Kristin Chapman 9, Amber Young 7, Courtney Miller 6 and Hannah Owens 2.
The Lady Cougars helped themselves by making 12 of 16 free throws during the game.
Kaitlyn Couples led all scorers with 15 points for a very young Anderson County team loaded with sophomores and freshmen.
