Since I was a little girl, I have always loved playing dress up. It may sound like a cliché, but its true.
My great grandmother had feather boas and piles of pearl necklaces. And she always allowed my aunt Joanna (one year older than me) and I to dress in her gowns and adorn them with accessories.
Surely this is where my love of dress up was born.
Growing up I dreamed of a professional job where I could where high heals and pretty makeup. While this dream came to pass, I find the high heals are taking their toll and makeup is now a necessity.
Halloween was always fun growing up too, whether I was a French maid or hippie. With the holiday approaching this week I feel liberated to again take part in the festivities now that I have a child.
Dressing Lucas in cute little outfits and parading him around for candy is one of the perks of having a child. It’s just too bad that he is not allowed to eat a lot of candy at his young age. I will just have to bear the burden of consuming most of it.
Since this is my first Halloween with Lucas I find myself really exited, even making plans all over town. There are church and city activities and then the neighborhood. I plan on getting the most out of this once a year spectacle.
My only predicament is if I should dress up. As I ask around, other mothers are not as exited about costumes. I have three readily available costumes to choose from in my closet. They can be thrown together in any limited amount of time.
A princess-of course comes together with a bright pink bridesmaid gown, a Chinese Geisha starts with a kimono and there are more 60’s and 70’s garbs to choose from.
Is dressing up too childish? I guess we have to make these decisions for ourselves. I don’t want to become boring and I am not into scaring people or using fake blood. Rather, I want to dress up as someone fun and worry-free.
Halloween is the perfect day to pretend to be someone fascinating. Well that’s the answer. I just talked myself in to dressing up this year. Now I have to decide what to be.
