Jellico High School’s boys followed up their regular season championship with a District 4-A Basketball Tournament title Tuesday night at Wartburg.
The Blue Devils defeated the host Bulldogs, 76-74, to earn another No. 1 seed in next week’s regional tournament. Jellico will host a quarterfinal game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Junior forward Cody Malicoat, the boy’s district player of the year, was selected MVP of the tournament after scoring 27 points in the title game. He also hit a trio of 3-pointers, grabbed 5 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists.
Three other Blue Devils scored in double figures and were named to the all-tournament team. Brent Ayers finished with 17 points, while Michael Smith had 11 and Gabe Mitchell 10. Dustin Smiddy added 5 points and Ethan Shelley had 4 points for Jellico (18-12 overall).
Smith led the Blue Devils in rebounds with 7, but Smiddy and Mitchell had 6 each, and Lee England had 5.
Mitchell also had 4 assists and 3 steals. Ayers had 5 rebounds and blocked 5 shots.
Jellico led 17-11 after the first eight minutes. Wartburg, 20-7 overall and the No. 2 seed, pulled ahead 29-25 at halftime.
The Blue Devils rallied in the third quarter and had a 50-49 advantage going to the fourth quarter.
Wartburg star Zach Shannon scored 21 points, followed by Alex Fountain and Brad Richardson with 13 each, and Cody Goodman 12. Fountain led all rebounders with 16.
The Bulldogs will also host a quarterfinal game on Saturday. The winners will advance to the region semifinals on Tuesday at Harriman. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday.
