Senior forward Cody Malicoat is the first Jellico High School player to be selected All-State by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA).
Malicoat joined Wartburg junior Alex Fountain as the only District 4 players on the 15-member Class A Boys’ All-State Team.
Headlining the team are Mark Sandoval and Allen Heaston of state champion Friendship Christian and Jacob Tucker and Cannon Rhodes of state runner-up Perry County.
Garrett Mullinicks from McEwen and Rafael Tyler from Lake County, both of who played in the Class A Final Four, also made the all-state team.
Other members of the TSWA Class A Boys’ All-State Basketball Team included Martavious Newby and Khalil Spencer of Booker T. Washington, Corey Nelson of Grace Academy, Derrick Spears of MTCS, Ben Kelley of Eagleville, Delaney Heathington of Lookout Valley and Preston Russell of Tellico Plains.
Malicoat averaged 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists per game as a senior while leading the Blue Devils to the semifinals of the regional tournament. He signed late last year with Middle Tennessee State University, becoming the first player in Jellico High School history to ink a letter-of-intent with an NCAA Division I program.
However, Malicoat did not qualify to play immediately according to NCAA academic guidelines. He has since decided to attend the University of Pikeville, an NAIA powerhouse in Kentucky where he will be eligible as soon as he steps on campus.
During the 2010-11 high school basketball season, Malicoat was named District 4-A Player of the Year and MVP of the district and regional tournaments after transferring from nearby Campbell County High.
