Cub Scouts from Norris’ Troop 73 traveled to LaFollette last Saturday for an adventure-packed community service project.

Ten Webelos (4th grade), led by den leader and packmaster Jeff Day, picked up trash in a gorge near the Hatfield Knob Elk Viewing Tower for an hour and a half, followed by a hike to the tower. Their parents also participated.

The den was asked to participate in the project by Jane Lewis of the Pine Mountain Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation when it was discovered that a large amount of trash had been dumped down a 40-foot gorge.

Some of the boys repelled down to get the trash near the drop-off, according to Day.

“We dragged up 12 bags of garbage from the bottom of the gorge,” he said.

Everyone left the project exhausted.

“It’s humbling to be in the elk tower looking over picturesque meadows dotted with elk,” said Day. “Our Scouts and parents saw the need to clean up the array of trash to preserve this wonderful site.”
