Owls, Eagles remain in the hunt for sectional championship

 Five of Campbell County’s middle school basketball teams were in action over the weekend when the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association East Sectional Championships got underway at Sevierville.

Both of Jacksboro’s teams advanced with first round victories. The Lady Eagles (17-3 overall) defeated Union Grove, 35-24, in their first-round game on Saturday. Olivia Brown led the Lady Eagles with 13 points, followed by Krista Williams with 8, Michaela Smith 6, Whitney Williamson and Courtney Charles 4 each. Jacksboro, which led 12-10 at halftime, moved to the next round to face Johnson City Science Hill.

Jacksboro’s boys advanced to play a second-round game against John Sevier from Kingsport.

LaFollette’s boys lived up to their No. 1 seeding with a 32-26 first-round victory over T. A. Dugger. Roston Letner paced the Owls with 14 points, including 9 in the first half alone. Dakota Dossett chipped in 8 points, while Austin North had 7, Ethan Jeffers 4 and Andrew Evans 1. LaFollette advanced to tackle Science Hill on Friday.

In the small-school divisions, Jellico’s boys were eliminated, 35-31, after leading at halftime of their tournament opener, while the girl’s team advanced to the next round.

The Lady Blue Devils won, 38-27, over Jones Cove at Catlettsburg. Emily Hughes led the scoring with 21 points, followed by Cortney Baird and Destany Bowlin with 5 each, Katie Cox 3, Sarah Prewitt and Machalla Perkins 2 each.

Jellico’s girls were eliminated 51-12 by a powerful Sullivan team in the semifinals on Monday.

Sydney Ward scored all 17 of her points in the first half to lead Sullivan. Hughes ‑‑ who was named to the all-tournament team ‑‑ led Jellico with 6 points, followed by Cox with 3, Desiree Elliott 2 and Bowlin 1.

Second round

The Lady Eagles were eliminated 31-29 Tuesday night by Science Hill. Williamson had 13 points for Jacksboro, followed by Brown with 6, Brooke Bane 5, Charles 3 and Krista Williams 2.

Jacksboro’s boys advanced to the second round with a 45-39 victory on Tuesday over John Sevier. Trey Torres led the Eagles with 15 points, followed by Darin Gillenwater with 14, Dylan Clawson 7 and Jordan Bruce 4. Jacksboro will play the winner of the Cleveland vs. Robertsville game.
