READER CHALLENGE: Envision Campbell County

-A A +A

What retailers would you like to see here?

By Brent Schanding

Small business is the backbone of any small town in America — but big-box retailers and national chains can often act as anchor stores that attract additional development and lure in more dollars to the local economy.

Take a look at smaller, local retailers near Walmart and Lowe’s in Jacksboro. Many thrive on the traffic produced by those larger stores.

And with an improving economy and many vacant storefronts in Campbell County, the area is ripe to attract other large-scale retailers. We’re also on a heavily traveled interstate, which captures large volumes of traffic each day.

Earlier this week, we asked our more than 2,000 Facebook fans what big-box retailer or national chain restaurant they’d like to see in Campbell County.

In less than a few hours, we garnered more than 100 responses.

Like-minded fans Sherry Bartley Wright,  Deborah Jones and Crystal Lewallen Hicks responded almost immediately with retailer Target.

Did you know the Minneapolis-based retail behemoth was originally founded as the Dayton Dry Goods Company in 1902.

Since its founding as a small business more than 111 years ago, the company has grown to more than 1,776 locations in the U.S. and Canada, with plans to expand in Australia. Last year, Target reported more than $69.8 billion in revenue and ranked at No. 38 on the Fortune 500 index.

While several of our social media followers would love to see a Target here, other fans suggested retailers Kohl’s, J.C. Penney Co., grocers Earth Fare and Kroger and popular cafes and restaurants such as Starbucks and Chick-fil-A.

We think all are great suggestions.

In the coming weeks, the LaFollette Press will launch a comprehensive campaign called “Envision Campbell County” where we ask readers and social media fans to continue the dialogue by telling us businesses and services they’d like to see in Campbell County.

The LaFollette Press plans to petition those retailers and restaurants to hopefully attract some here.

Want to help us?

Send us your best pleas. It can be a letter, photo or video — but be creative. We’ll share some of your best suggestions in upcoming issues, as well as our website and Facebook page.

We’ll also forward your requests to retailers and businesses and actively engage them with you — their potential customer base.

And who knows? In some time, you might just be sipping a skinny, grande iced Frappucino while pushing your cart through the new Kate Young collection at a local Target retailer.
