An 81-year-old female fell pray to a purse snatching on Christmas Eve while finishing some last minute Christmas shopping at the Dollar General Store in Jellico.

According to Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson, the victim was exiting her vehicle when a white male came up behind her.

The defendant was later identified as Jeffrey Lee King, 39, of Rockholds, KY.

“(The defendant) grabbed her purse with such force it ripped the handle off in her hand and knocked her to the ground,” said Anderson.

The incident caused serious injuries to both the victim’s hands, said Anderson.

According to the report, King fled on foot across the Kentucky state line.

Inside the victim’s purse was $112, a checkbook, keys, license and a Bible she had carried since she was a teenager, the report indicated.

Police were unsuccessful in apprehending King on the day the crime was committed.

However, on Jan. 4, Captain Jeff Partin and Officer Wayne Conrad observed King as a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Walker Road.

“After stopping the vehicle King was arrested on warrants for the Dec. 24, incident,” said Anderson.

Arlene D. King, 32, of Rockholds, KY., was also arrested on a warrant out of Campbell County.

King was charged with aggravated robbery, assault and theft of property under $500.

Arlene and Jeffrey King are scheduled to appear in court for the charges on Jan. 23.
