On July 3, David Ausmus drowned to death in Norris Lake.

Ausmus, 51, Speedwell, had been walking along the bank when he appeared to have tripped and fell, Sgt. Matthew Wasson, of the Campbell County Sherriff’s Department said.

When Ausmus fell, he is believed to have hit his head on a large rock before rolling into the lake, Wasson said.

Witnesses said Ausmus had been drinking and couldn’t swim, Wasson said.

The witnesses entered the water, attempting to help Ausmus, Wasson said.

The LaFollette Rescue Squad recovered Ausmus from the lake, and he was transported to Tennova Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Wasson said.
