Spiritually Speaking God’s Abiding Love Pearl Harper Something that always amazes me is God’s faithfulness. Pslam 119:89-90 puts it this way; “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth and it abideth.” Ecclesiastes 1:4, “one generation passes away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth forever.” I Corinthians, chapter 13, is such an inspiring chapter concerning love. We are told that no matter what we do, we are as sounding brass and tinkling cymbol if we have not charity (love). Verse 13, “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love).” What a promise we have in I Peter 1:23, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” God’s truth abideth forever. Man has a sinful nature that only God can change and forgive. We find some priceless wisdom in I John 1:15-17, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” The world that we know seems to become less and less stable, nothing seems to have stability, or be secure. Why would anyone not choose to love God? When we read about abide, or God’s abiding love, we know it will endure, it means continuing in a permanent state. Consider the abiding protection found in Psalm 91:1, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty.” I have heard people make the remark, “I hope I make it, or we want know until the end if we are saved or not.” One man told me years ago that he was going to wait until he was old and sick before he got saved. I first thought he was joking, but I realized he was serious. Even as a young Christian I knew that wasn’t a well thought out plan. John 15:7 tells us how we can know our prayers will be answered; “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Still another promise is found in John 15:10, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s Commandments, and abide in his love.” In the old and new testament we find over 359 times that we are to keep God’s commandments. It seems that most people do not comprehend how important it is to keep God’s commandments. From what I can understand, it is the only way we can be sure we are abiding in God’s grace and he is abiding in us. God Bless.
