Spiritually Speaking

Pearl Harper   Overwhelmed? Trust Christ!   Did you ever make a phone call and get an answering machine with a message such as if you want to place an order, press one, if you want to check on a payment, press two, if you want to- well, you get the picture. Then after you are given an option of punching numbers one to nine, you still don’t hear anything that addresses the problem you are currently having. Sometimes the possibility of getting a real live human voice seems hopeless. That is the way a lot of problems in our world seem right now. If we are trusting in the knowledge and capabilities of man or woman, it is not a sure thing. I don’t mean that it ever was, but, with so many things failing, and changing so quickly, it makes as much sense as those answering machines. If anything has rocked your world lately, just be confident, Jesus never fails. There is still hope. Just because our problems may seem larger, more difficult, seemingly impossible that doesn’t change any of God’s promises. It seems we have forgotten our early Christian experience. I remember to me, the most important thing was I did not want to do anything that wasn’t pleasing to Christ. I don’t know how things were for you, but I gave my heart to Christ in a small church in Kentucky. It was a life changing experience. The heavy burden of being convicted of not knowing Christ and the immediate peace that passes all understanding flooded my very being. Looking back I realize how many people with good intentions, constantly reminded me of all the things I could not do. Later I realized not very many told me all the plus sides there were to personally knowing Christ; like the love, joy and peace that the devil could not take away. There are many verses that lets you know God’s promises are real and never change. He hears our prayers. I love the scripture in James 5:16 “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Many times in my life when I would feel overwhelmed concerning a problem or incident, the Lord would remind me of II Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear: but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” A sound mind or clear thinking is a great gift. When my brother Robert Bryant passed away in July 1985, he was 31- years- old. He lived in Detroit. The morning of his funeral I sat up on the side on the bed and it seemed as if my legs would not move. I was overwhelmed at facing the day. Then like a still quiet voice I heard the words, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” The next thing I knew I was in the kitchen at my cousin’s house helping prepare breakfast. I just wanted to remind you, with the unexpected, quick moving changes we are seeing in our world today, hold on to the knowledge God never changes. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us “his mercies and compassion fails not…they are new every day and faithful…” The most overwhelming thing in this world is if we do not trust in Christ. God Bless.
