Spiritually Speaking Pearl Harper Who is leading our children? Have you ever heard the story concerning the Pied Piper? Supposedly there was a town in Germany that was infested with rats. A man dressed in pied clothing claimed to be a rat catcher. Pied as near as I could find meant colored clothing in big blotches. The town of Hamlin promised to pay him if he got rid of the rats. He played a musical instrument and all the rats followed him into the Weser River where all of them drown. The town reneged on their promise to pay him. The man left town angry but vowed revenge. He returned on St. John and St. Paul day while everyone was in church. He played the instrument again, 134 children followed him out of town. There are three versions as to what happened to the children. One was he led them into the water to drown, one was he led them into a cave and the other was he sold them back to the townspeople. But most say the children drown. Fact or fiction? I don’t know. But it is quite an interesting story. There seems to be several kinds of Pied Pipers after our children alluring them to follow them today. Two things stood out in my mind in the story. One, if the townspeople reneged, or lied to the man they were suppose to pay, then they couldn’t have been serious about church. The other thing was why weren’t the children in church? I know a lot of the older generations know beyond a shadow of a doubt what is right and what is wrong. There are no gray area’s with God, it is sin ,black, or pure, white. I have heard every excuse in the world why it is okay to use curse words and all the other crude, rude things they put in movies or on a TV program. Some sound like they are trying to convince you or maybe themselves. I tell them if they think it is alright with God, then surely it is alright with me. It provokes thought anyway. Children usually mimic what their parents do without even thinking- you know they do as they see their role models do. So we need to be sure we are leading them right. The story of the Pied Piper made me think of scripture in Proverbs 6:12-15, “a naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a forward mouth. He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teaches with his fingers; Forwardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall be broken without remedy.” If we don’t “lead” our children who will? If we do as Proverbs 6:12-15 tells us, we could lose everything. As I stated before there are Pied Pipers out there setting traps for everyone, especially the children. We had better be a role model before the enemy leads them, their souls are too precious. God Bless.
