SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: Happy Mother's Day

-A A +A
By Pearl Harper

What a wonderful privilege being a mother.

What an opportunity we have to teach and train our children.

I found this thought I wanted to pass on to you. It was published by the “Gospel Tract Society Inc.”

The writer was anonymous but the thoughts are priceless. It is entitled, “Train up a child.”

She could not give her children gold, so she gave them faith to have and hold.

“She could not give them a royal birth name renowned throughout the earth. But she gave them seeds and a garden spot and shade trees when the sun was hot. She could not give a silver spoon or servants waiting night and noon. She gave them love and a listening ear and told them God was always near.

She could not give them ocean trips aboard majestic sailing ships, but she gave them books and quiet time. Adventures found in prose and rhyme. She could not give them worldy things but what she gave was fit for kings. For with her faith and book and sod she made each child aware of God.”

Some of my happiest thoughts are looking back over the years to when my children were young. I was blessed to be home with them most of the time. Remember now, this was way before all the things that came along to keep them so busy. We ate meals together, we played board games, our son Gary played baseball and basketball. We all enjoyed the games. Often, Bob was coach and Donna was scorekeeper.

Many of our vacations were spent on the lake camping and fishing. Not with campers and trailers, but with tents and sleeping bags. We were young, we didn’t mind. Later we never had much opportunity to take Cristie camping, but now she enjoys going with her family using a camper.

Many years have passed since I started submitting my first columns to the LaFollette Press.

I believe it was 1973.

They were small and short at first, for 40 years I have shared my faith and my family with the wonderful people of Campbell County.

I love the Lord. I have realized over the years, the only thing he needs from me is my worship and praise. He is totally in control and will supply all our needs if we let him and depend on him. (Phil. 4:19).

I love my family. They always want to know what I want for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day, etc.

I always will tell them pretty much the same thing.

For us to all be together as much as possible.

A prayer to pray over family and friends every day is III John Verse 2. John wrote, “Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in good health, even as thou soul prospereth.” John often called us little children. Verse 4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Before they could inquire about Mother’s Day, I asked them if they could come to LaFollette and go to church with me on Mother’s Day. I wanted to give them opportunity to work it out if possible. I have three children, nine grand-children, and three great-grandsons. I love my daughter-in-law,, and two son-in-laws. Now four grandchildren are married, and our number is growing.

I love it!

Happy Mother’s Day to Peggy, Donna Heather, Leigha and Cristie.

God Bless.
