SPORTS NOTES — June 9

Swingin’ for Talan, a baseball tournament for youth league teams, will be held June 10-11 at Asbury Park in Caryville. The tournament is a fundraiser for Talan Hooks, a young boy suffering from Leukoencephalopathy. Any donation will help to make this tournament a success. For more information, call Russell Mills at 423-494-3552. The tournament will be a double-elimination format and will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 10. There is no entry fee for teams, however players and coaches will be charged $1 each at the gate.  Age divisions are 5-6, 7-8, and 11-12. Admission will be $3 for adults and $2 for children 12-and-under.

The Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited, in cooperation with the Tennessee Valley Authority and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, will host its annual Kids Fish Free Day at Miller Island on Saturday, June 11. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the TVA Miller Island Access on the Clinch River tailwater near Norris. Volunteers will be on hand to teach kids how to bait fish, spin fish and fly fish. A limited amount of equipment will be available for loan to children who don’t have access to a rod and reel but would like to try fishing. This event is suitable even if you know how to fish, but would like to learn more about trout fishing. Other activities will include fly tying demonstrations, casting lessons, boat rides and stream ecology. The event is being held in conjunction with Tennessee’s statewide Free Fishing Day. No fishing license is required on this date. For more information, visit www.crctu.com. To reach the Miller Island Access, take the Clinton/Norris Exit 122 of I-75 and turn east toward Norris. Just past the Museum of Appalachia, turn left on Hwy. 441 toward Norris Dam. Just past the little white church (Island Home Baptist), turn left onto River Road. Drive about one quarter mile and take the first right into the parking lot.

Jacksboro Middle School will host a cheerleading camp June 13-15 for girls ages 3-14. The camp will run from 9 a.m.-noon each day. Registration fee is $40, which includes lunch and a t-shirt. Campers must have a copy of their insurance card.

Caryville Elementary will host a basketball camp for boys and girls entering 3rd through 6th grade. The first session will be June 13-14; boys 9 a.m.-noon and girls 12:30-3:30 p.m. The second session will be June 20-21; same times. Campers can register at 8:15 a.m. Cash only please. Registration fees are $30 for one session or $55 for both.

The inaugural Officer Greg Cox Campbell County Cancer Association Benefit Softball Tournament will be held June 17-18 at Asbury Park in Caryville. On June 17, games will start at 6:30 p.m. On June 18, tournament play will begin at 9 a.m. Entry fee per team is $150. The tournament format will be double elimination. All proceeds will go to Officer Greg Cox’s family and to the Campbell County Cancer Association. The Campbell County High School Baseball 2011 Elite Instructional Camp will be held June 20-23 at Brown-Archer Field from 9 a.m.-noon. The camp is for first graders through rising ninth graders. Camp fee is $40, which includes a t-shirt; four days of instruction from CCHS staff, college baseball players and area coaches; and the opportunity to be evaluated by CCHS staff. The Campbell County/LMU Soccer Camp will be held June 20-24 at the LaFollette Elementary School soccer fields. Camp hours will be 9 a.m.-noon. Lunch will be provided. Lincoln Memorial University will host three sessions of the Josh Schertz Basketball Skills Camps. The dates are June 20-24, June 27-July 1, and July 11-15. The annual Cove Lake 5K is set for Saturday, June 25 at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $15 for anyone that pre-registers by June 17 and $20 after that. Pre-registered runners are guaranteed a race t-shirt. Awards will be presented in numerous age categories. Registration forms are available at the Cove Lake State Park office and also at the front desk of the LaFollette Press.

The 5th annual Firecracker 5K Run/Walk to Benefit Campbell County Schools will be held Sunday, July 3, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Deerfield Rental. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. Refreshments will be provided. Entry fee is $25. The first 100 people to register will receive a shirt. Registration forms are available at the front desk of the LaFollette Press.

Campbell County High School will host a basketball camp July 11-14 for girls and boys entering grades 1-8. Camp hours will be 9 a.m.-noon daily. Registration fee is $50 per participant. Instructors will be CCHS coaches Matt Housley and Ryan Browning, with assistance from current high school players. Each camper will receive a t-shirt.
