Friday is the final day parents or legal guardians can register to receive toys for their children through the Toys for Tots program.
“Basically, this will be the final call,” Campbell County Toys for Tots Coordinator Debi Mikesell said. “Friday is the final call; it’s the last day.”
Today, registration will be held in Newcomb at the Crazy Quilt from 10 a.m. to noon. Friday, registration will be held at the Campbell County Courthouse.
“We have to have a cut off date in order for us to get the toys ready to go,” Mikesell said.
The toys must be purchased, separated into age categories, packaged, and made ready to go with parents. When people come to register, they learn when and where the toys will be distributed.
In order to register, parents and legal guardians must bring proof of residence, which shows they live in Campbell County.
Such documentation as photo identification that includes an address, rent receipts and utilities receipts will be accepted.
Parents must also bring either a birth certificate or Social Security card for each child being registered to receive toys.
“Registration is very quick, it only takes a couple minutes for them to fill out each form,” Mikesell said.
In Campbell County, the Toys for Tots team is comprised of various people in the community. Toys for Tots provides toys for children from newborns to 12 years old.
“This is our fourth year,” Mikesell said. “We work alongside the Marine Corps and our local honor guard helps us as well.”
Various volunteers and donors collect toys for the Toys for Tots program throughout the year.
Boxes will be located at various businesses such as Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s and local banks. People can place new toys in these boxes as donations to Toys for Tots.
Different organizations participate in fundraising events throughout the year. Money raised is used to purchase toys. No clothing is purchased; only toys, Mikesell said.
“We go to our local stores in Campbell County and purchase toys,” Mikesell said. “The money is raised in Campbell County, the toys are purchased in Campbell County for the children of Campbell County.”
The toys are given to children as Christmas gifts.
Over 400 are registered to receive toys so far this year, Mikesell said. Six hundred received toys last year.
Anybody with questions about registration can call the Campbell County mayor’s office at 562-2526.
