What faults Christ found with the seven Churches in Revelation – Do many exist today?

-A A +A
By Bea Wallen

I, John, both your brother and companion in tribulation and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day and I heard behind me a loud voice as of a trumpet, saying “I am Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,” and what you see write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are is Asia; to Ephesus to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea” (Revelation 1:9-11). Read chapters two and three for its completeness yourself. The message to Ephesus: “that you have left your first love” (Revelation 2:4).

“Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works”, verse 5.

The Epheses church like many in today’s churches were diligent in their efforts of works, their labor, their patience, their perservence. But in despite of their zeal, something to a departure of Christ and what was done though the Cross. It is so serious that it will lead the church to ruin unless repentance is forthcoming.

Message to Smyrna: “Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life: (Revelation 2:10). Smyrna was poverty stricken outwardly but the Lord proclaimed them spirtually rich. The spirit is saying there will be suffering and tribulation but; “He who overcomes shall not be hurt of the second death” (Revelation 2:11). Refers to the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8).

Message to Pergamos: “But I have a few things against you” (Revelation 2:14).

Despite the terrible condition of this church, some were holding fast to Christ. But there were others in this church committing spiritual adultery, shifting their faith to other things such as fornication. And the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes (verses 14 and 15).

This false doctrine the Lord hated and we shout hate it also. The Lord warned this church to “repent or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth” (Revelation 2:16).

Message to Thyatira: “But hold fast what you have til I come” (Revelation 2:25).

“I know your works and charity and service and faith and your patience and your works and the last to be more than the first” (Revelation 2:19).  Some in this church continued to love the Lord; the Lord knew who they were. But notice “Works” are mentioned twice with the last being in a negative sense, meaning they were depending on their works instead of on Christ and the cross. But Christ also had a few things against this church because of the teachings if the women Jezebel, which calls herself a Prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols (Revelation 2:20).

The Lord once again gave the warning to repent from spiritual fornication and adultery and to heed the message that “salvation is not by works.”

He was saying unto the people of Thyatira, that did not succumb to the teachings of Jezebel, “to hold fast and don’t allow your faith to be moved to other things til I come” (verses 24-25).  “To he who overcomes and keeps my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations” (Revelation 2:26). It is “his works and not our works” pure and simple it is what Jesus did at the cross on our behalf. Power over the nations speaks of the coming Kingdom age.

I will continue with the Revelation to the last thee churches in my next writing. Continue on with your own readings from the word of God.
