Sensei Peter Wooden was promoted to 5th degree black belt in Kung Fu San Soo on Thursday evening, Feb. 17. Master Gerry Myers conducted the award ceremony with Sensei Larry Bostic, chief instructor of the Academy for Martial Arts in the LaFollette Fitness Center, attending. Sensei Bostic also teaches at Clinton and manages the LaFollette Fitness Center. Wooden is also ranked as a 3rd degree black belt in Jujitsu and 4th degree black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu. Kung Fu is documented back to 1,500 B.C. with the San Soo portion added some 500-600 years ago. It is a southern Chinese style. Shaolin Kung Fu is approximately 1,500 years old and is a northern Chinese style. Wooden’s devotion to and skill development in the martial arts reflects great credit to himself, the Academy and to the art. Wooden is very deserving of this promotion, and Myers and Bostic hope it holds him in good stead in his move to New Mexico with his wife, Brigette, who is also a black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu.
