  • Jellico leaders spar at meeting

    With only four months remaining in the fiscal year, the town of Jellico finally has a functioning budget.

    “We poured through the numbers and we brought the numbers in line with what we felt like was genuine, not a pie-in-the-sky deal,” said Jellico Mayor Les Stiers.

    The new budget accounts for a $624,637 decrease in revenues combined with a $555,520 decrease in expenditures.

  • Dople grateful for Ayers

    A LaFollette woman is alive to watch her three children grow up after the work of a Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy and EMS workers.

    On Dec. 14, Doris Dople was suffering from an asthma attack when she decided to drive herself to the hospital just before noon.

    She doesn’t remember getting in the car.

    The next thing Dople knew, she was looking at her oldest son from her hospital bed with a tube in her throat.

  • Plea agreements settle cases

     The following cases were resolved in criminal court this week with the use of plea agreements:

    •J.C. Ward- possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia; two years unsupervised probation, court costs, $2,000 fine.

    •Tiffany Nicole McGill- theft over $1,000, vandalism over $1,000, felony evading arrest, felony reckless endangerment, possession drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest; two years supervised probation with two years judicial diversion, court costs, $150 to ECF.

  • CCSD terminates two

    A school resource officer and an auxiliary police officer have been terminated from their positions.

    The firings came after Sheriff Robbie Goins was informed of allegations of misconduct.

    “Late last Tuesday these allegations were brought to our attention,” said Goins. “We immediately notified the district attorney and began looking into the situation.”

    A coordinated decision was made to request the investigation be handled directly by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

    Galilee Bible Camp will be hosting a few events in March.
    These events include the outdoor adventure, the chili and pie fundraiser and the scrapbooking retreat.

  • Evans drops intern elimination

    Fifth district county commissioner Alvin Evans reconsidered his proposal to eliminate the summer intern program. The issue wasn’t even discussed at Tuesday night’s commission meeting.
    At the Feb. 11 commission workshop, Evans suggested eliminating the summer intern program in order to reestablish the commission’s discretionary funds.
    District one commissioner David Adkins asked how much money was budgeted for the summer intern program. Evans told him $70,000.

  • Commission approved HVAC repairs at J Sports Building

    The commission has approved spending $1,385 for HVAC repairs at the J Sports Building.
    This isn’t the first time the county has paid expenses for Trail Manor, the business that currently occupies the J Sports Building. Trail Manor has already avoided $54,000 in rent payments through its lease agreement and a reprieve it was granted in October.
    The Campbell County Commission granted Trail Manor a six-month delay from paying rent at the October 2012 meeting.

  • Local youth Leaders to host Disciple Now for teens

    The third weekend in March, 100s of teenagers will gather for the second annual Disciple Now event.
    “The whole gist of the weekend is to give them (youth) three services,” said Shane Carney, youth pastor at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church. “It’s really to help grow the kids that are in the local (churches), help them grow deeper in their walk with Christ.”

  • Nashville talks could mean resource officers in each school

    Several bills circulating in the state legislature could help provide school resource officers in elementary and middle schools across the state.

    Five bills sponsored by three state representatives could ensure the increased police presence.  District 26 Rep. Dennis Powers said the changes would be welcome.

    “I think it’s a great idea. I’ve said from the very beginning that we need to have at least one [school resource officer] from every school,” he said.
