  • Car accident on I-75 claims life, leaves others injured

    A fatal car crash on I-75 outside of Jellico left one child dead and several others injured last Thursday.

    Crystal P. Smith, 38, of Atlanta, Ga., was traveling on I-75 North, in the left lane, near mile marker 159 when the vehicle traveled sharply to the right, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) report.

    Smith allegedly overcorrected, causing the 1996 Isuzu Rodeo SUV to overturn and strike the median barrier wall, according to THP Trooper Mathew Chitwood’s report.

  • Fourth annual tractor and engine show returns to Jellico

    It’s time once again for the fourth annual tractor and engine show in Jellico.

    The show starts at 10 a.m., this Saturday in the grass parking area at the stage in Veteran’s Park in downtown Jellico.

    People are invited to bring any unit that may be of interest to spectators, according to Jellico Tourism Director Jake Bennett.

    “It doesn’t have to be an old unit, just something interesting. If you’ve got one (tractor or engine) at home that you’re proud of then bring it on down,” Bennett said.

  • Jacksboro man arrested twice in one week

    One trip to jail apparently wasn’t enough for a Jacksboro man who was arrested twice in a week on unrelated incidents.

    Granville Joseph Day, 20, of 187 School Street, Jacksboro, was arrested on Aug. 11 by Campbell County Sheriff’s Officer Jaymi Sammons for possession of schedule VI controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, according to the sheriff’s report.

  • Weavers donated winch to aid in county cleanup efforts

    Mike and Jody Weaver, owners of the White Oak rock racing course and Rocky Top OHV Park, donated a winch to the county in an effort to aid Environmental Officers Glennis Monday and Roger Byrge in cleaning the area up.

    “We’ve been to 49 of the states and this is probably the most beautiful area of them all; anything we can do to help keep it beautiful is worth the effort,” Mike Weaver said.

    He, along with his wife, have assisted Monday in the past on some of his county cleanups so they knew just how much the county needed a winch.

  • Jellico Utilities discussed security deposits and payment arrangements

    With a tough economy, unpaid bills have been a concern for many utilities and Jellico is no exception.

    At the Jellico Utilities meeting last week, board members discussed security deposits and payment arrangements, though no major decisions were made.

    The main topic was security deposits and the utilities problem with unpaid and seemingly uncollectable bills.

    For most people a family gathering is done around a table, but for three men it involved going to jail. Edward J. Robinson, 24, of 209 Cherry Street, LaFollette, Daniel Lee Robinson, 22, of 195 Hill Lane, Caryville and Brandon Albert Robinson, 28, of 209 Cherry Street, LaFollette are charged with theft over $1,000 last week

  • School employees kick year off with enthusiasm

    A sea of red, blue, orange and maroon converged on Jellico Monday morning.  

    Hundreds of school system employees, dressed in t-shirts representing their respective schools, streamed into the Church of God Mountain Assembly in anticipation of the first in-service of the 2009-10 school year.

    While the gathering, that included everyone from central office staff to the maintenance department, was meant to mark the beginning of a new year it was also a celebration of sorts for the accomplishments achieved during the previous year.

  • Counterfeit bags seized

    Larry Watters, owner of Lota Bags may be accused of possessing counterfeit merchandise but the warrant served on him on Monday by the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department was real.

    Officers were looking for merchandise bearing counterfeit logos at the business as well as at Watter’s home, according to the search warrant.

  • Jellico gets back on the track

    Extreme rock racers are revving their engines as they prepare for the Eastern Division Rock Racing finals, which will be held on the White Oak course Saturday.

    Due to its success in the past, it looks as though there will be ample opportunities to view the outing for years to come.

    “It’s just so good for our area and it does so much for our town. We just hope it’ll bring in more and more people,” said Jellico Tourism Director Jake Bennett in a previous interview about the event.

  • Classes gearing up for Best of Times III

    Remembering the best of times is easier with a little help from friends. So Gail Stout Herrin, alumni president, is seeking memories, movies and more to make next year’s LaFollette High School reunion “one worth coming home for.”

    The planning for the four day long event, beginning Thursday June 3, 2010, is well underway. The Alumni’s Historian, L.C. Madron, is the official chairman of the first event. Herrin and Sue Byrd Troutman, secretary, hope to  really get things rolling in the coming months.
