  • Two groups focus on one common goal

    If it takes a village to raise a child then it takes a community to build a house.

    For years Campbell County Habitat for Humanity has relied on area volunteers to assist in the construction of homes. With the undertaking of its twenty-fifth home, Habitat has added a new group of volunteers to the roster.

    Clients of the Cornerstone program at Ridgeview have signed on to swing hammers, sweep floors and generally help a Habitat family build their home.

  • Methodists head north to Alaska

    With not only backing but a blessing from their church, the LaFollette United Methodist Church (LUMC) Mission Team will travel to Alaska on Saturday.

    During Sunday’s service, Dr. Kenneth Faught held a commissioning service for the eight members of the team.

    “They are a part of us,” Faught said to the congregation of the church. “They will represent us.”

    As the group stood in front of their fellow church members, Faught led the service where worshippers asked for the group to be richly blessed while in Willow, Alaska.

  • Board censures LaFollette lawyer

    A courtroom ruckus has resulted in a LaFollette attorney being reprimanded by the board governing his profession.

    J. Stephen Hurst was censured last week by the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee, according to documents released by the board.

    The censure serves as a warning to Hurst and doesn’t affect his ability to practice law.

  • Park dedication to be held in Snodderly's honor

    Ken Snodderly was a man who, according to his wife, loved both the city of LaFollette and children, so it is only fitting that a park be dedicated in his honor.

    The City of LaFollette Parks and Recreation is dedicating the soccer field as Ken Snodderly Park on June 26 at 10 a.m.

    “It’s long overdue,” said LaFollette Parks and Recreation Director Johnny Byrge.

    He said Snodderly was instrumental in getting the soccer program started.

  • Duff man garners stallking and assault charges

    A Duff man found himself behind bars after he allegedly made threats and pointed a handgun at a Jellico woman.

    Walter A. Stanford, 69, of 516 Habersham Road, Duff, was arrested on June 9 for harassing and threatening to kill a Jellico woman, according to a Jellico Police Department (JPD) report.

    Jellico Police Officer David Douglas was dispatched to the victim’s residence after the victim reported Stanford had pointed a handgun at her and threatened to kill her, the JPD report said.

  • Rape suspect arrested

    Jeffery A. Cress, 47, of 139 Eastwood Drive, LaFollette has been charged with rape of a child. The charge was filed after the 7-year-old alleged victim and her mother reported the incident to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department.

    The victim was visiting a home where Cress was at on June 2 when the incident allegedly occurred.

    The victim, along with her mother, went to the sheriff’s department to file the complaint against Cress on June 2.
