  • LaFollette citizens make complaints about dogcatcher

    It has been over a week since Christine Chase’s dog was taken to the Campbell County Animal Shelter for alleged aggressive behavior.

    However, a shifting story about her dog’s actions and prior incidences with the LaFollette Animal Control officer Stan Foust led her to appeal to the LaFollette City Council on Tuesday night.

    Chase said she was told her dog was in a fight with another dog last week.  She claimed the other dog belonged to Foust.

  • Library board addresses LaFollette Council

    A discussion on extending library hours in LaFollette led to debate about moving the library at Tuesday’s LaFollette Council workshop.

    A letter drafted by the LaFollette Public Library Board stated the library board unanimously approved extending the library service hours under several stipulations.

  • Chief Lynch recommends promotion, debates salary

    LaFollette Police Department Detective Jeff Allen was recommended for a promotion to the LaFollette City Council Tuesday night.

    “This is a position we have to have filled,” said Police Chief James Lynch about the promotion of Allen to a Lieutenant.

    Lynch further explained to the council that Allen meets all of the qualifications and recommended he have a starting salary of $35,000.

  • LaFollette Splash Park opens this Friday

    One of the ways to enjoy the start of summer, now that the heat is on and school is out, is being offered by the city of LaFollette at the recreational Splash Park.

    Free to both children and adults, the park offers cool, spraying water to refresh and in some cases chill out the little ones.

    On Friday, starting at 10 a.m. the park will be having its annual grand opening. Hot dogs and drinks will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • LaFollette Council faces difficulty in balancing budget

    At the end of a lengthy workshop meeting the LaFollette Council received copies of next year’s proposed budget.

    City Administrator David Young explained the budget faced a deficit of about $204,000, which the council would need to make some cuts in order to balance.

    At the council meeting in June, the councilmen will approve the budget in the first and second reading. Public meetings will be held for the council to discuss department head requests for additional funds and balance the budget.

  • Caryville man garners drug and theft charges

    Michael Justin Estep, 28, of 322 Park Place Lane, Caryville, was arrested on May 22 for possession of stolen property and possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, according to a Jacksboro Police report.

    Jacksboro Officer Corey Taylor was dispatched to Highland Street on the report of a couple of suspicious people, according to Taylor’s report.

  • Downtown jam prepares for Tuesday kickoff

    For the fourth year, the annual summertime downtown jam will perform in the large parking lot behind the municipal buildings in LaFollette.

    Glen Parker, event organizer, recruits performers from as close as Knoxville and as far away as Elizabethton to entertain a massive crowd every Tuesday night.

    The first event will be next Tuesday, June 2, starting at 7 p.m. Kicking off the evening will be The Ole Spice Band, a local country music group.

  • Jellico Police Department updates weapons

    At last Thursday’s Jellico Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson appeared before the mayor and aldermen requesting the purchase of Tasers and rifles for the Jellico Police Department.

    “We want to enter Tasers into our force continuum,” Anderson said.

    The cost for seven Tasers and cartridge holders would be $5,513.21, not including cartridges, according to Anderson.  The funding for the purchase would be taken from the drug fund.

  • Jellico receives water assistance grant; discusses road repairs

    Almost a year after the well was drilled Jellico Utilities has received the funding to pay for it.

    At Thursday night’s meeting, Jellico Utility Manager Mike Bethurem approached the board of mayor and aldermen requesting they accept the USDA/RD Emergency Community Water Assistance Grant.

  • LaFollette man faces weapons charge

    An alleged verbal altercation led to the arrest of Joseph Aaron Sharp, 22, of 216 Ellison Road, LaFollette.

    On May 23, Jacksboro Police Officer Josh Carroll was dispatched to Springfield Lane in Jacksboro on a report of a verbal altercation, according to a Jacksboro Police report.

    Upon arrival, Carroll found several people having an altercation in the roadway, with Sharp being the primary aggressor, according to Carroll’s report.
