  • LUB plans for TVA rate decrease

    At Tuesday night’s LaFollette Utilities Board (LUB) meeting, Utilities Manager Kenny Baird briefly discussed the recent Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) fuel adjustment decrease.

    “It’s good for us and our rate payers,” said Baird.  The decrease will equal out to around three-percent on a 1,000 kilowatt bill.  This will be an average of $3.10 off per 1,000 kilowatts, according to Baird.

  • Pignapped in the Park comes to Rickard Ridge

    Lots of food, music and motorcycles are planned for the Pignapped in the Park fundraiser event this Saturday at Rickard Ridge BBQ inside Cove Lake State Park.

    Benefiting the Wilderwood Service Dogs organization, the event will be collecting donations for the food and entertainment. Wilderwood’s specializes in extensive training of dogs for those with neurological conditions such as autism.

  • Louie Bluie Festival nears

    With headliners such as Guy Davis and Hokum’s Heroes, event organizers project a large turnout of locals and visitors alike at this year’s Louie Bluie festival.  In its third year, the festival celebrates and commemorates Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong’s life. 

    A native of LaFollette, Armstrong grew up during the coal boom days, learning the musical traditions of the many ethnicities striving to carve out an existence in the East Tennessee hills.

  • Suttles arrested for rape

    Deputies called to St. Mary’s Emergency Room by hospital staff have charged Shawn Suttles, 23, 290 Bill Brown Lane, LaFollette, with rape.

    “Based on the preliminary investigation it was enough to charge him (Suttles) with rape,” said Campbell County Sheriff Gary Perkins.

    The victim, a 15-year-old female, was brought to the ER by her mother, said Detective Jimmy Jeffries.

  • Trail of trash leads deputies to burglary suspect

    What started as a report of a stolen utility trailer in Paradise Cove ended when a Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy drafted several warrants for the arrest of Jeremy Allen Strong, 36, of LaFollette.

    After taking the initial report by the trailer’s owner, deputy Darrell Mongar interviewed neighbors and investigated the surrounding area, which led him to Strong.

    Neighbors in the Paradise Cove area allegedly spoke to Strong as he loaded up the trailer and left the scene in March, according to Mongar.

  • Classes of 2009 embark on new chapters of life

    Whether it was on a football field or in the sanctuary of a church, the excitement of the 2009 graduating classes could not be contained.

    On Friday night, 77 Jellico High School seniors crossed over a stage into the adult world.

    The ceremony held at the Church of God Mountain Assembly Tabernacle was highlighted by the traditional senior class video showing the graduates through the years.

    A failing economy and rumors of lost franchises have overshadowed the auto industry recently.   

    Yet on a local level, dealerships report improvements and share high hopes for a brighter future regarding sales.

    “As far as Rainbow Chevrolet is concerned, we’re here to stay,” said owner William Paredes.  

    Paredes said as far as the rumors go about his franchise closing, it is not true.

  • Weekend fun leads to lake fatality

    While many people enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend, one group of visitors was met with tragedy after a night of drinking on Norris Lake.

    A large houseboat with about 14 occupants woke on Sunday to find Aaron Clem, 25, Dayton, Ohio, had died, said Campbell County Sheriff’s Detective Jimmy Jeffries.

    “The preliminary investigation shows he (Clem) may have died from alcohol toxicity,” said Campbell County Sheriff Gary Perkins.

  • Packs get bond reduced to $100K

    Even though Richard Pack took the witness stand promising to watch over his adult sons, his testimony was not a deciding factor in a bond reduction hearing on Tuesday.

    Russell Pack and Phillip Pack are facing second-degree murder charges in the death of Jayne Love. Their attorneys appeared in court Tuesday afternoon asking the judge to lower the brothers’ bonds in hopes of the two being released from jail.
