  • New legislation could be life saving for some women

    The Breast Care Prevention Act could be a game changer.
    If passed by Tennessee lawmakers this term, women with questionable mammogram results will have the option of further testing, specifically an ultrasound.
    As it stands now ,women whose tests indicate dense breast tissue aren’t informed of the ramifications.
    Women with dense breasts have an increased risk of breast cancer, according to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

  • Winnie sent to prison

    Anthony Craig Winnie is headed back to prison after pleading guilty to more than 20 criminal charges Monday.

    Winnie had been charged in a series of car burglaries that occurred in November 2012. Following the plea, Winnie was sentenced to five years in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Corrections. He had been released from TDOC supervision in September 2012.

    Winnie and Phillip McGhee were arrested just days after police believe the two burglarized as many as 24 cars in the Jacksboro area.

  • Former volunteer fire chief arrested

     Acting on a warrant issued out of Bradley County, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department arrested former Pinecrest Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jerry Moat at his home.

    The warrant charged Moat with theft over $1,000.

    When CCSD authorities, assisted by Jacksboro Police and the United States Marshal Service, arrested Moat he told them “He had been expecting this.”

  • Thefts mean hi-tech security for Jellico Electric and Water

    A month ago, thieves stole $15,000 worth of copper and brass from the Jellico Electric and Water service.
    Before that, they cut grounding wires off some of the trucks.
    Last week, they stole a chainsaw.
    “If it’s not tied down, people are taking it,” said J.E.W.S. General Manager Billy Rowe.
    Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson agrees security is needed at the various utility department properties and that’s why the agency seeks to install a high-tech monitoring system.

  • Grant money means boost to Battle of the Belts

    Campbell County High School was one of 26 schools in the country to receive a $2,000 grant from Project Ignition, a teen driver safety program.
    “The grant was specific to help with the Battle of the Belts program,” said Alexis Keiser, coordinated school health director.
    Battle of the Belts is a competition between other local high schools to increase seatbelt usage among students. In East Tennessee, CCHS, Oak Ridge High School, Pigeon Forge High School, Midway High School and Heritage High School are participating.

  • Smoke detectors available

    LaFOLLETTE-The state has given the LaFollette Fire Department about 90 smoke detectors with batteries that will last about 10 years. The LFD will install the smoke detectors in the homes of LaFollette residents free of charge. Those interested should call 562-3340.

  • Council discusses invoice for furniture at library

    LaFOLLETTE—Monday, the city council discussed a $1,470.78 invoice from Office Furniture Outfitters for chairs at the public library. LaFollette Library Director Nancy Green has the money in her budget, but needs the city council to approve paying the invoice, she said. The council will meet Tuesday.

  • LaFollette city council discusses firing a public works employee

    Monday, the LaFollette City Council addressed hiring a police officer, promoting a police officer and terminating a public works employee.

    The council members discussed promoting LaFollette Police Officer Stephen Wallen to detective. If promoted, Wallen’s salary will increase by $1,500.
    “He’s been doing a good job,” LaFollette Police Chief Jimmy Jeffries said.
