Zak Lewis of Cincinnati set a course record Saturday morning at Deerfield to repeat as Firecracker 5K champion.
Lewis, a 27-year-old former University of Dayton runner, finished the demanding course in a scorching 17 minutes, 49 seconds. That was 4 seconds ahead of 43-year-old Jerry Bricking, whom he passed down the stretch. The two ran neck-and-neck throughout the race until Lewis took the lead and began to pull away with a quarter mile left.
“As soon as a I got to the top (of the last hill), I was ready,” said Lewis.
