  • TEACHER SURVEY: Parents just don't understand

     CAMPBELL COUNTY—Nearly half of district teachers say parents and guardians aren’t doing enough to promote academic success for their students. That’s according to one finding of a recent statewide TELL survey. 

  • Liquor license renewed

    CARYVILLE—141 Wine and Spirits is certified to sell their wares for another year after a narrow vote by Caryville’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
    New Alderwoman Lisa Crawford and Mayor Chris Stanley abstained from voting. Alderman Mark Stanley passed on the vote. Alderpersons Allan Smith, Lloyd Lawson, Glenn Smith and Vickie Heatherly voted in favor of the measure.

  • Money earmarked for paving

    CARYVILLE—The town of Caryville set aside nearly $68,000 for paving projects. The town had $327,489 in its general fund as of April 30.
    Alderwoman Vickie Heatherly would prefer to see a loan taken out for the project instead of using money from the general fund.
    “I’m all for paving all the roads that we can, but just going about getting the money a different way instead of depleting our funds. I mean, I know it’s not gonna deplete them, but it’s gonna bring them down,” she said.

  • Russell chosen as LaFollette City Administrator

    At Tuesday night’s meeting, the LaFollette City Council chose Billie Russell as the new full-time city administrator.

    “This is history,” council member Joe Bolinger said. “As far as I know, there’s never been a woman city administrator before.”

  • Statements reveal bank blunders for Jellico

     The town of Jellico spent nearly two weeks in the red last summer as finance problems slowly came to a head.

    It was May when the town first became overdrawn, according to bank statements obtained by the LaFollette Press. 

    The statements are records of only some of the town’s accounts according to Mayor Les Stiers.

    “That’s for most of the accounts, not all of them,” he said. 

  • Woman arrested for allegedly pulling gun on Jellico utility worker

    An earlier incident at the Jellico Electric and Water System led to a warrant for an arrest last week.
    On April 25, Billy Rowe, the utility’s general manager, and Woody Swafford, the water department supervisor, advised Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson about an incident in which an employee’s wife reportedly came to the building and threatened another employee.

  • Burglary call ends in vandalism, drug charge for LaFollette woman

    A LaFollette woman was jailed after she reportedly destroyed the front door of a home at 200 Smith Oak Lane.
    The victim told police that Kimberly Nicole Walden, 702 S. 21st Street, LaFollette, came to her home and began kicking the door and swearing at the victim, telling her to come outside, according to the report.
    Walden then allegedly began striking the front door of the home with an ax.
    Walden was found on Ridenour Lane where she reportedly admitted to causing the damage. She was arrested and taken to the Campbell County Jail.

  • LaFollette man’s computer seized; arrested on child porn charges

    A LaFollette man was arrested on child pornography charges following an investigation by Det. Dan Schneider of the Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce.

  • Teen clipped by car

     CARYVILLE—A 16-year-old driver was taken to Tennova Medical Center in LaFollette after a train clipped his car.

    On April 29, the teen was pulling into the driveway at 1471 Highway 16 in Caryville. The driveway crosses the Norfolk Southern railroad and is marked with stop signs.

    According to the report, the teen ran the stop sign and his back bumper was clipped by an oncoming train. The impact caused the teen’s vehicle to spin around and come to rest on the east side of the tracks. 

  • Embattled former high school teacher arrested for DUI

    A former Campbell County High School educator who resigned Jan. 28 after allegations of inappropriate conduct was jailed early Sunday morning after police say he was found driving under the influence.
    Jason Scott Ivey, 34, 282 Meadowwood Circle, LaFollette, was seen driving on Central Avenue in the dark without his headlights. The officer, Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy James McCall,  allegedly witnessed Ivey attempt a lane change and nearly strike another vehicle.
