    JACKSBORO – The Board of Education will pay just more than $18,000 to replace furniture lost in a small fire at Wynn Elementary School last winter.
    School and Office Supply was the low bidder for the contract at $18,402.15.

  • Several cite need for quality homeownership

    CAMPBELL COUNTY—Homeownership. It used to be the American dream.

    But with a soured economy, a wave of foreclosures and escalating costs associated with owning a home — the dream seems out of reach for many. 

    According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, Campbell County boasts a 71 percent homeownership rate — slightly higher than the national average.

  • Clawshank redemption: Shelter worker's testimony damning of practices at Adrion W. Baird Animal Center

     LAFOLLETTE – An hour of sworn testimony about conditions at the Adrion W. Baird Animal Center surfaced earlier this week confirming rumors of kicked cages, trapped cats and improper euthanasia techniques. 

    In April, attorney Terry Basista placed shelter employee Brenda Watkins under oath and allowed her to share details of practices at the shelter. Watkins has worked at the animal shelter since 2006.

    Changes in shelter operations were made at the beginning of Betty Crumley’s tenure as director in 2008.

  • Jellico to hike taxes; summoned to state comptroller's office for continual issues

    JELLICO—Jellico property owners could soon see a tax increase as leaders in the small town struggle to come up with ways to stay out of the red.

    During Tuesday night’s special-called meeting, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen barely passed the first reading of an ordinance adopting the annual budget and tax rate for fiscal year 2013-14.

  • Caryville's $1M projecting higher revenues

    CARYVILLE—Officials here approved a $1 million operating budget Monday night that earmarks an estimated $59,000 in state road-paving projects. 

    Nearly $436,000 of the funds are allocated to cover salaries and expenses for 13 government workers employed by the town. 

    The budget, effective July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014, was passed 6-1 without any last-minute comment from the public or town officials.

  • New maps could highlight town, link hikers to services

    LaFOLLETTE—In order to “highlight downtown LaFollette and its rich history,” the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce is producing maps.
    These maps should draw Cumberland Trail hikers to LaFollette, leading to economic development, according to Corey Barbour, Chamber Vista. The maps “give them something to pick up and walk to downtown LaFollette after they’re done hiking.”
    A connector trail links downtown to the Cumberland Trail at Tank Springs.

  • COUNTY OFFICIALS NEGOTIATE LEASE

    JACKSBORO—County officials voted down a $1,200 lease agreement for three satellite offices, which provide vital government services to Jellico, citing high cost and an unfair division of payment obligations.
    The county rents a building in Jellico from Cherry Artis for $900 a month, where it operates several governmental services.  The lease expires June 30.

  • COUNTY COMMISSIONERS: Cuts can be made to pave county roads

    JACKSBORO—At the budget and finance committee discussion Tuesday night, County Commissioner Tom Hatmaker presented $1.16 million in cuts to county operations.
    But Campbell County Finance Director Jeff Marlow said the money can’t be redirected.
    Only five committee members—Hatmaker, Bob Walden, Beverly Hall, Sue Nance and Charles Baird—attended the meeting. Eight members are required for the committee to be able to take official action, but those in attendance decided to discuss the budget.

  • Archery camp shoots off at Jacksboro Middle

    Jacksboro Middle School will host an archery camp, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
    The camp is free, and is open to children 11 to 14. Lunch will be provided everyday by the summer feeding program.
    A grant provided archery equipment for Jacksboro Middle School this past year. Teachers were trained to become archery instructors, and the school implemented an after school archery program.
    “It’s been very, very successful so far,” JMS assistant principle Nicki Bumgardner said. “The kids are loving it.”

  • Lake City man arrested for drugs on way to family reunion

    CARYVILLE— A Lake City man was arrested for drug possession in Caryville Sunday evening after he was pulled over for speeding on his way to a family reunion in Scott County.
    Eric Russell, 29, 198 Huckleberry Lane, Lake City, was stopped by Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Carroll.
    In the report, Carroll noted Russell was nervous during the stop. When Russell was asked to produce his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance, Russell reportedly began to cry and said he didn’t want to be in trouble.
