  • Jail ministry shines light in dark places

The walls and floor are littered with graffiti.
The writings proclaim everything from a love a of heroin to a love of a God.
The room has a stale smell of hopelessness and despair.
But for five hours every Sunday night that changes.
Instead it is filled with a message of faith and deliverance.

  • Battlin' Blue Devils

    A swing. A miss. A celebration.

That’s the way the hard-fought battle ended on Tuesday night, as the Jellico Blue Devils took a close one from the Oliver Springs Bobcats, 10-9.

The two teams battled all the way through, producing three ties and three different lead changes.

However, Jellico proved its battling spirit, as Austin Bowlin struck out the final two batters to walk away with the win.

For Bowlin, the Blue Devil fight comes from one thing.

  • Power of Provins

Rusty Provins was nothing but a one-man show on Saturday.

The Cumberland Gap junior is the only athlete on the Cumberland Gap track team, but that’s not his most impressive performance.

Currently, Provins is ranked first in the state in the discus throw.

“It’s a very good feeling, especially because of how much work I’ve put into it,” Provins said.

Coming into Saturday’s Hardin Valley Invitational, he had already secured the top spot in the state.

  • Dossett takes home 100-meter record

Bryce Dossett could be atop the LaFollette Middle School record book for a long time to come.

Earlier this season, the eighth grade sprinter broke the 100-meter dash record, posting a 13.36 second time.

In Thursday’s meet at Campbell County High School, she broke her own time, posting a 13.2.

  • Column: The perfect game

    Yu who?

I’m sure that’s how many felt on Tuesday night after the Japanese pitcher stunned the world with a near perfect game.

Pitching for the Texas Rangers, Yu Darvish threw a perfect 8 and 2/3 innings against the Houston Astros.

However, needing only one out, Marwin Gonzalez laced a single between Darvish’s legs in order to keep the perfect game from happening.

While I only saw the final innings, the game was an exciting one, but I would rather be where I was.

  • Easter recipe reminds of Holy Day

Several years ago I found this recipe for Easter Story cookies in a Nature Living Magazine, and decided to share it again with you readers.

We live in a world where too many children only have a secular view of Easter. Our children need to be taught that Easter is not about colored eggs and Easter bunnies, or spring break. It is about an empty tomb and a risen Christ.

  • The week that changed the world

I borrowed the headline from a wonderful Easter play or Cantata I saw several years ago. It was fantastic. There was so much love and devoted faithfulness by everyone who participated, it was so encouraging.

If you would read Matthew 23-25, you will read of the last sermons Jesus preached.

So much happened the last week of Jesus life on Earth, I can share a little of it, but you should read it in its entirety.

  • Comment mirrors turbulent times

“Now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.   Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,  and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him” (Colossians 3:8-10).

  • Winnie sent to prison

Anthony Craig Winnie is headed back to prison after pleading guilty to more than 20 criminal charges Monday.

Winnie had been charged in a series of car burglaries that occurred in November 2012. Following the plea, Winnie was sentenced to five years in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Corrections. He had been released from TDOC supervision in September 2012.

Winnie and Phillip McGhee were arrested just days after police believe the two burglarized as many as 24 cars in the Jacksboro area.
