  • Expectations are high for this year's Louie Bluie Festival

    Though only in its third year, the Louie Bluie Festival continues to grow. Organizers project a large turnout of locals and visitors alike as the festival celebrates its third year and commemorates Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong’s 100th birthday on June 13.

    A native of LaFollette, Armstrong grew up during the coal boom days, learning the musical traditions of the many ethnicities striving to carve out an existence in the east Tennessee hills.

    Junior Wilson and girlfriend Debbie Nelson have opened a candle shop in LaFollette.

    Butterfly Scents carries a full stock of homemade candles and lotions. Always a big lover of art, Nelson said she felt candle making was a special kind of art and had always fascinated her.

  • Jellico courts remain in limbo

    Jellico is drawing ever closer to finally establishing a municipal court system after going for nearly two years without one.

    A recent decision made by the state court of appeals has cleared the way for the town to reestablish its court system. The Jellico Mayor and Aldermen met Monday night to set a judge’s salary and continue the process towards establishing the court.

    “We can’t hire anyone until we set a salary,” said Mayor Forster Baird.

  • Two women net drug charges

    Two women arrested at the House of Hope last week, now have no hope of evading drug charges.

    Connie Ann Carroll, 43, of 523 North 9th Street, LaFollete, and Ashley Nicole Marlow, 23, of 226 5th Street, Jellico, were both arrested on drug charges on April 27, according to Jacksboro Police Department records.

    Detective Mike Starrett was dispatched to the House of Hope on a report someone smelled marijuana.

  • Coal truck trailer overturns

    An over turned coal trailer slowed traffic on Highway 297 on Friday morning.

    A Hinch Trucking driver was negotiating a curve, traveling west on Highway 297, when another vehicle crowded him in his lane, according to Tennessee Highway Patrol Officer Mike Wilson.

    The driver came to a stop in order to avoid an accident and let other vehicles continue on around him, according to Wilson.

  • Powell-Clinch to host benefit concert

    For that reason Powell-Clinch Utility District is hosting a benefit concert at Campbell County High School (CCHS) on May 9. The concert’s feature performers are the Kentucky Headhunters, a Grammy Award winning country rock group.

    Opening for the Kentucky Headhunters is Josh Wallace. Wallace is known for his non-stop intensity, said Powell-Clinch Marketing Coordinator Robin Proffitt.

  • Sheriff’s department makes another arrest in Valley area burglaries

      As new evidence arises in the burglaries of valley area residences, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to make arrests.

    A total of 21 burglaries that hit residences in the Glades Springs, Davis Chapel and other valley area residences are being solved by detectives, said Campbell County Sheriff Gary Perkins.

  • Diabetes contest winners recognized by Lions Club

    Event speaker Dr. Darryl Wilkens used both illustrations and information to bring attention to Diabetes at the awards presentation of essay winners hosted by the Lions Club of Campbell County Tuesday evening.

    The crowd was larger than anticipated with students, winners, parents and teachers being awarded for participation.

    Though Wilkins gave a lengthy presentation on Diabetes, the students being awarded had done their research and created essays about the condition affecting many Americans.

  • Extended library hours established at workshop

    Though the discussion on extended library hours has been debated in the past, Councilman Joe Bolinger again addressed the possibility on Monday night.

    The council determined an excess of funds are in the library budget that could be used for part-time help. Therefore the council decided it would open the library on Saturdays for five hours with a part-time person. Since part-time help is a budgeted item then there were no objectives to pursuing the extended hours.

  • Douglas arrested for possession in Jellico

    When a call to the Jellico Police Department warned of an intoxicated person walking in the road, officers responded immediately earlier this month.

    “The caller advised Jellico dispatch of a lady that had nearly been struck by a construction vehicle coming from the welcome center,” said Jellico Police Chief Chris Anderson.

    Detective J.J. Hatmaker was dispatched to Holiday Lane and questioned Carla Edwina Douglas, 27, about the allegations.
