  • Debate on Young’s contract on hold; grievance still looms

    The post July 4 fireworks anticipated for Tuesday’s LaFollette City Council meeting proved to be little more than sparks when Councilman Hansford Hatmaker decided to hold off on action to revoke City Administrator David Young’s contract.

    When Hatmaker made a motion to void Young’s contract Reid Troutman, city attorney, took the opportunity to interject some legal advice.

    Troutman told Hatmaker he had spoken with the TML attorney who suggested the council sit on the issue until a court hands down a ruling on the validity of the contract.

  • Coalition receives grant for festival

    It has been just weeks since the curtains  closed on another successful Louie Bluie Festival. But the Campbell Culture Coalition is already looking forward to next year’s production.

    Thanks to the recent award of a grant through the Tennessee Arts Commission, the group will have an additional $8,000 injected into the event’s 2010 budget.

    According to coalition member Jo Anne Myers, money from the grant will be used exclusively to add to the list of talent already slated to perform at the festival.

  • Group focuses on hope and healing

    Georgia Sergent is no stranger to loss. Unfortunately, it has come to her door twice- taking her husband each time.

    In 1974, Sergent was a young wife and mother when her husband, Dallas, died in a construction accident. Racked with grief Sergent didn’t know where to turn for help. As she began calling in search of support groups Sergent quickly learned most of these groups focused on the grief of those much older than her.

    However, after several phone calls she soon found Beginning Experiences.

  • Cress indicted for rape

    A man arrested last month for allegedly abusing a child has now been indicted by the grand jury.

    On Monday, Jeffery A, Cress was indicted for the rape of a child.

    He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge on July 27.

    Authorities began an investigation into Cress’ alleged conduct after a 7- year- old girl and her mother came forward, reporting the allegations.

    Cress was visiting a home, where the child was, in early June. It was at this time that Cress allegedly touched the child in an inappropriate sexual manner, the police report said.

  • Six count indictment handed down for Phillips

    After the grand jury convened on Monday, Jerry Phillips was indicted for six counts of aggravated sexual battery.

    The indictment came almost two years after the allegations were initially levied.

    In 2007, Phillips was accused of molesting a then 7 –year- old girl who was a relative of his girlfriend at the time, LaFollette Police Detective Sgt. Jason Henegar said following the arrest.

    But when the child was interviewed during that investigation, she didn’t disclose the exact nature of the alleged abuse, Henegar said.

  • Roaden facing more jail time

    Emma Roaden appears to be a woman battling addiction. In court on Monday, she appeared before the judge because of a probation violation.

    A violation that was filed after she was arrested in June for public intoxication, possession of a schedule III controlled substance, criminal impersonation and criminal trespass.

    Standing before Criminal Court Judge Shayne Sexton, Roaden began to cry as her probation history and subsequent arrest were recounted.

    Currently she faces six years behind bars if Sexton revokes her probation.

  • Jellico police report busy holiday

    Jellico Police Department was swamped this Fourth of July weekend with an abundance of complaints and citations, all of which occurred in a 36-hour period.

        There was a total of 86 citations written; six being drug related and ranging from drug possession to illegal prescriptions.

        A few complaints were made about fireworks, but in none of those situations was the activity illegal. With 33 complaints made over the weekend officers were kept busy.

  • 4-H Summer Camp planned for kids

    Keeping kids busy this summer shouldn’t have to be a task. And for the UT extension of Campbell County’s 4-H Club it has become a mission to entertain the little ones.

    One of its plans to this summer’s schedule includes a free 4-H day camp planned for July 14 and 15 at the LaFollette Recreation Center from 9 a.m. till noon each day.

  • Pregnancy help reaches Campbell County

    In the eyes of a pregnant 16-year-old life can seem very intimidating.

    But with some help from the first Pregnancy Help Center to reach Campbell County, this load can be greatly lightened.

    Since April 6 they’ve been assisting the pregnant, those who are already parents and those who may be pregnant by administering pregnancy tests, diapers, maternity and baby clothes and tons of information.

  • Reading program ends with grins and giggles

    The LaFollette Public Library Summer Reading Program came to an end Tuesday morning with young readers and their families crowded into LaFollette City Hall for one last day of fun.

    Reading or just listening to at least 100 books won 68 children a bright green t-shirt and a certificate.

    In only five short weeks these determined little scholars read a compilation of 8,645 books.  Rachel Branham, the overachiever in the group, had the most reads with 210 books. Thirty- four children who took part didn’t miss one session of the program all summer.
