The light of the fact that Jesus is coming again, what kind of people ought we be?

In II Peter, the third chapter, the Apostle Peter was teaching about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. In (verse 11), he asked this question, “What manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness?” (verse 14)  Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.

Four ways to look at giving

“Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (See 2 Corinthians 97, RSV)

It started back in late summer. Wife Yvonne and I peeled, sliced, and placed out in the hot July and August sun, bucket after bucket of apples.  The sweet, juicy slices baked under the sweltering star until they were completely dehydrated, shriveling and crinkling up into chip-like vestiges of their former selves.  After the drying process was deemed finished, we placed them into freezer bags for storage.

Fans for the opposing team are people too

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers”  (Ephesians 4:31).

Last Saturday was a rare treat for Marcia and me. We attended the Tennessee vs. Ole Miss homecoming game at Neyland Stadium. It was the first time in years we’d been there for a game. And accompanying us were our son Josh and his wife from Maryland and our daughter Susanna and her husband from Nashville.

A dark night exploding with brightness

I’m sure it was just another ordinary night for the shepherds as they watched over their flocks the night that Jesus was born. They had no idea what was about to take place; but then the extra-ordinary happened.

  • What about Thanksgiving?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

This is where if I could I would insert the sound effect of a record player needle scratching across a vinyl LP and me saying “What?!”

I mean really, did I miss the memo or have we quit celebrating Thanksgiving?

Now, before those of you who have already decked the halls quit reading for fear that I am just about to jump up on my soapbox, don’t worry, I’m not going to start preaching.  Well, at least not much.

  • On behalf of our children

Does your child wake up every morning with a fear of attending school? Or does your child come home from school in a poor mood, maybe with unexplained bruises and scrapes? Or does your child often ‘lose’ or ‘forget’ his or her belongings at school? Have you ever considered that maybe these incidents are actually not so coincidental?

Your child may be a victim of bullying.

Thanksgiving should be at the heart of our celebration

Think about how often in a day someone does something for you, however small. How often do you say thanks? Now think about how often God helps you in a day. Think about how much God has given you. How often do you say thanks to him? Thanksgiving is a celebration of the giver and the gift. We should celebrate often.

    God is not against celebration!

He wants us to celebrate, but for the right reasons.

Now don’t get me wrong, fall is always a beautiful time of the year.  Some showcase super-brilliant foliage.  Others are, well, more drab, with less splash and panache.  I would have to personally rank this fall as being a little less spectacular on the scale of falls I’ve experienced.
