    Legs update

Since taking office in January, the governor has made clear his vision for wholesale reform of Tennessee’s education system. He has said student achievement should be the cornerstone of any educational initiative. Legislators agree and have stated on numerous occasions that promoting teacher excellence is one way to ensure that vision becomes a reality for Tennessee students.

  • Don’t let the sun go down

       This is Sunshine Week.

For the average citizen this might go by unnoticed. However, for journalists it is a time we observe the public’s right to know how their governmental agencies are operating.

Without an open records law and open meetings law governments could operate sans public scrutiny.

  • Shining the light on this week

Newspapers mounted “Sunshine Sunday” -- a campaign reminding Floridians of the high level of openness they enjoyed, highlighting the benefits of government transparency and detailing potential consequences of the proposals. Only a few passed.

    Library Director Mark J. Tidwell

Jellico Public Library hosted a President’s Day reading program on February 21.  Linda Hollars, retired Whitley County teacher, dressed in full costume as Betsy Ross, came and quizzed the kids on presidential trivia.  The kids did pretty well with all those presidential questions and seemed to have a great time.

  • Today’s mistakes will shape the rest of your children’s lives

In the last few months a number of child abuse cases have been resolved in criminal court.

The resolution in these cases has been nearly identical.

The mother has received prison time while the male accused in the case received a lighter sentence.

In all of these cases the man accused wasn’t the father of the abused child. Instead it was a boyfriend, paramour, lover, whatever label you want to put on him- he was somebody the mother just allowed into the life of her child.

Ladies it is time to wake up.

  • Safer communities come with training

Keeping the community safe goes beyond patrolling the roads and making arrests. It means having a fully trained staff of deputies.

Since taking office in September, I have made training a priority for the officers at the sheriff’s department.

I am proud to say that in six months we have had officers attend six various schools.
