  • Inmate ministry program a saving grace

     To the editor:

My daughter is one of the volunteer leaders who was mentioned in the article about the women’s jail ministry. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to visit this jail ministry first hand. By the grace of God, I have never had to face what a lot of these women are facing. Rightly so, they are paying for crimes they have committed, however, they are more than inmates serving time. Above all else they are children of God just like you and I.

  • Provide greater access to more sports

     To the editor:

As parents, we should be providing as many opportunities for our children as possible. Whether it is academics, athletics or social clubs, any extracurricular activities make for a more disciplined and well-rounded child. We know that it improves their self-esteem, physical fitness and contributes overall to a better community. When children are busy with other activities, they are less likely to get into trouble.

  • Cancer Association says 'thanks' for support

     To the editor:

The Campbell County Cancer Association extends sincere appreciation to everyone for our successful Telethon held April 6 on WLAF Channel 12. More than $32,000 in pledges were made during the program to help local cancer patients.

  • RE: County animal shelter

     To the editor:

I am writing in response to recent allegations against the Campbell County animal shelter Director Betty Crumley.  Many accusations have been made against Mrs. Crumley and many people have behaved badly and in a manner not befitting those of us that simply want to learn the truth.

  • GOVERNOR: Healthcare a complex issue facing this state

There is no more important, or more complex, issue facing our country and our state today than healthcare.

While Tennessee is doing a better job than the rest of the country in controlling costs of Medicaid growth, the costs are still taking a larger and larger percentage of our budget each year.

For the last several months, I’ve been working on a plan to change the way healthcare coverage looks in Tennessee.

    To the editor:

  • What I learned when I went to jail

I went to jail last week. I wasn’t arrested. I wanted to go.

For several years I have known that a women’s jail ministry existed. I knew that each Sunday the women of Celebrate Recovery gave of themselves expecting nothing in return. But knowing it and seeing it are two different things.

So last Sunday I willingly entered the guts of the county jail. And while I will tell you I would strongly prefer never returning there I don’t regret going.
