Dear husband,

Whenever you part ways with the homestead to endure training for any length of time, things tend to take on a different form around here. The grass grows taller, the laundry pile is smaller, and the children are at a level of crazy of which even the best of scientists and parenting experts offer no explanation. So, allow me to grant you a small window into life as we know it in your absence:

Lunar Lunacy: Does the full moon...

 Nobody can quite put a finger on it, but there’s just something different when the moon is brightest in the sky. 

A full moon occurs roughly once a month when the earth is directly between the moon and sun. It has often been blamed for strange happenings. In fact, the word “lunacy” comes from the word “lunar.”
 While empirical evidence doesn’t support theories about full moon follies, the anecdotal evidence is compelling.

All the other girls wish they could be like her.

As Ally Greene crossed the final hurdle, her knee clipped the top, causing her to stumble.

However, she quickly regained her balance in order to grab the win in the 2013 East Tennessee Middle School Elite Championships on Tuesday night.

“I hit my knee a couple times, and I thought I wasn’t going to win,” Greene said. “I put out my hand at the end, and I beat her.”

CFD to provide fire protection...

CARYVILLE — Caryville’s fire department will cover an area left unprotected after the Pinecrest Volunteer Fire Department dissolved last fall.
The Campbell County Rural Fire Service took some of the uncovered area, but asked the CFD to cover some of the homes on McGhee Lane near the industrial park. Having fire protection will lower homeowner’s insurance for the residents.
Mayor Chris Stanley said he and fire chief Eddie Hatmaker had met about the initiative, and all firemen were on-board with the decision.

The Jellico Middle School Baseball game will travel to Cumberland Gap for its final game of the season. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Bruce, Wells take Angler of the...

Nick Wells and Jordan Bruce prevailed through the wind and rain on Saturday to take home the top honors for the Campbell County High School fishing team.

The pair roped in 13.45 pounds in the weathered tournament in order to retain the Angler of the Year awards.

“We knew we had it when we caught the big fish,” Wells said. “We’d seen (Caleb Dople and Zach Paul) weigh in five smaller fish, and we were pretty excited just to get the rods and the bragging rights.”

LaFOLLETTE—It was race day Saturday morning, as dozens of Cub Scouts from Campbell, Claiborne and Scott counties converged at First Independent MIssionary Baptist Church on Beech Street for the Cumberland District's Pinewood Derby racecar competition. Each hoped to take home top honors, but only one scout emerged with the checkered flag and a trophy to testify to their wood whittling skills.

Taylor McKeel knelt down, wiping the dirt from home plate.

Knowing it would be his last performance on the Campbell County diamond, he kissed the plate following the Cougars’ 6-1 victory over Central to advance into the District 3-AAA tournament.

“It was really bittersweet,” fellow senior Bo Farris said of the victory.

Campbell County struck late, after they struggled with getting base runners home during the first four innings.
