LETTER: Likes the new look of...

 To the editor: 

 I read the LaFollette Press! 

Several weeks ago I was standing at a checkout at a busy convenience store along our four-lane in town. I glanced to my right and sitting on the newspaper rack, I noticed the store had started to carry an international or fancy national paper.

Much to my surprise, upon closer inspection, I found that the paper was our local LaFollette Press. The look and lay out were attractive and well presented. 

I bought a copy and read it cover to cover. 

Man arrested after claiming...

Campbell County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ken Daugherty was dispatched to Rarity Mountain last Thursday after a cell phone tower maintenance crew called about a man on a motorcycle.
Michael Paul McGill, 32, of 948 Eslinger Court, Kodak, was headed south on Interstate 75 when he exited at Rarity Mountain and told four maintenance men that the Vigilantes motorcycle gang was chasing him and going to kill him, according to Daugherty.

LETTER: New flag flying high in...

 To the editor: 

I’d like to express appreciation to Tom Hatmaker, LaFollette Tree Service for his help. This past week he removed and replaced a damaged and badly soiled U.S. flag at the Shell service station on the four-lane in Jacksboro, just west of LaFollette’s city limits. For some time the flag had been dangling by a single connection on a really tall flag pole in front of the station. In a recent conversation with the business owners, they remarked that they had no idea of who to contact to remove the flag.  

'Blessed are the merciful...

 Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7). Perhaps the merciful are shown mercy because there are no more wonderful gifts for sinners to receive. 

Mercy is its own reward. 

The poor in spirit will receive the kingdom of heaven. 

The mourners will receive comfort. 

The meek will inherit the earth. 

They that hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled. 

What do the merciful get? 

Mercy.

WLAF: 60 years of broadcasting

 LaFOLLETTE—Locally-owned and operated 1450 AM WLAF celebrates 60 years on Friday with tributes from past on-air personalities, local bands and more from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Old Regions Bank Building, downtown.

In the early 1950s, a group of LaFollette businessmen decided the community needed a radio station. 

The group — including Ed Balloff and Ed Wheeler — eventually signed Campbell County’s first radio station, 1450 WLAF, on the air May 17, 1953. 

Relay for Life kicks off tomorrow

American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be at Jacksboro Middle School from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday. There will be much to see, hear and eat.
“We do have food (and) entertainment,” said Cyndi Russell, Relay for Life committee co-chair.
