Multiple churches putting ‘Compassion in Action’

Many Christian organizations plan to put “Compassion in Action” this weekend as they distribute food in Duff, Elk Valley and LaFollette beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Stand, a local non-denominational ministry, will work with area churches to give away the food at Grace Age Fellowship Church in Duff, New Canaan Baptist Church in Elk Valley and the Dewey Hunter Center in LaFollette.
Mission partners—who met The Stand  Pastor Joey St. John throughout his years of ministry— are paying for the food.

Council picks Rogers Group for STP projects

LaFOLLETTE—The city council approved the $479,193 Rogers Group submitted for Surface Transportation Program projects. This bid must be approved by the Tennessee Department of Transportation before the city will receive the STP money. This money will be used to pay Rogers Group to pave South Avenue from Jacksboro Pike to Loop Road, 13th Street from Central Avenue to Beech Street and South Cumberland Avenue from Central Avenue to city limits.
 

Jellico Electric & Water Services responds to contractor’s lawsuits

JELLICO—Jellico Electric & Water System is willing to pay the more than $80,000 Cozy Excavation and Contracting, LLC. says it is owed, but the utility wants to give it to a judge to divvy it out.
In a response filed in Campbell County Chancery Court, the utility says Cozy Excavation “left three unresolved liability claims against it,” and that the claims should be resolved before Cozy sees any of the money it claims it is owed.
The utility ultimately asked that the suit against it be dropped and went on to counter sue the excavating company.

Third annual Summer Health Celebration set for weekend

Various organizations will host the Third Annual Summer Health Celebration and Carnival at the Dewey Hunter Center in LaFollette Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.
“It’s just to raise awareness about what kind of organizations are in this town,” said Christine O’Dell, Court Appointed Special Advocates volunteer coordinator. “To raise awareness about health.”
Health professionals will provide free blood pressure checks, hearing exams, body mass index screenings and visions exams.

Dozens of Vacation Bible schools planned

During summer break, many children spend their days swimming in pools, jumping on trampolines and sleeping in. Churches use this time to teach children about God through Vacation Bible School.
“We share what the Bible says with them about Jesus and Christianity,” said Eric Wright, music director at First Baptist Church of Caryville. “(VBS)’s main focus is to share the love of Christ with them.”

Budget out of balance

LaFollette’s officials must produce a balanced budget by the end of the month. However, as they met for a workshop after the regular meeting Tuesday night, they discovered the general fund is currently $133,000 out of balance. This doesn’t include the wish list from the city’s department heads—which totaled more than $350,000 before city administrator Billie Russell mentioned she needed a vehicle for work operation. The former city administrator vehicle was wrecked in January and hasn’t been replaced.

City applies for credit limit

LaFOLLETTE—The city council on Tuesday approved applying for a city credit card. Council member Hansford Hatmaker asked who would be responsible for the card.
“Billie will be in charge of the credit card,” Mayor Mike Stanfield said, referring to the new city administrator—Billie Russell.
“Good deal,” Hatmaker said.
 

EMS to offer training at East LaFollette center

LaFOLLETTE—The city council will allow the Campbell County EMS to use a room at East LaFollette Community Center. Campbell County EMS hopes to offer first aid, CPR and other training to organizations in the community from the new site at East LaFollette.
 

Man whose dog bit deputy arraigned on multiple charges

CAMPBELL COUNTY—A LaFollette man was arraigned in Campbell County Criminal Court Monday on multiple charges filed against him during two separate incidents in April.
Dale Wilson, 629 Grantsboro Rd., LaFollette, answered to nine charges in criminal court where he entered not guilty pleas to each count.

Lawsuit claims bankrupt town breached contract

A Clinton excavating company is sueing the town of Jellico for more than $80,000, after it said the town failed to render payment for services performed.
In the three-page complaint filed May 28 in Campbell County Chancery Court, Cozy Excavation & Contracting, LLC claimed it was hired to make improvements to the water treatment facility. The work was completed, according to the suit.
