No boating fatalities on Memorial Day weekend for third consecutive year

NASHVILLE–The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is reporting that there were no boating-related fatalities reported over the 2013 Memorial Day holiday weekend. It marks the third consecutive year that the unofficial weekend start to the summer boating season has been free of boating fatalities.
During the Memorial Day holiday period from Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27, there were eight total reported boating accidents for the second straight year. Three of the accidents resulted in injuries and the other five were property damage accidents.

Free fishing day puts kids outside

NORRIS–More than 30 volunteers and twice as many children turned out Saturday for the 11th annual Kids Fish Free Day event at the Miller Island river access area below Norris Dam.
The Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited sponsors the event the first Saturday of June every year.
Kids had a chance to put on a pair of waders and fish for trout with the help of adult chaperones. They also got to tie their own fishing flies, take boat rides and learn about aquatic life and river conservation.

NICKAJACK LAKE, CHATTANOOGA – For two Campbell County High School fishermen, it was a chance to prove themselves.

Caleb Dople and Zach Paul are two freshmen who have proven they have what it takes, only being edged by juniors Nick Wells and Jordan Bruce in the Anglers of the Year competition this season.

The duo have bigger fish to fry in their next three seasons at Campbell County High School.

NICKAJACK LAKE, CHATTANOOGA - Jordan Bruce and Nick Wells have become accustomed to fighting off other anglers during the 2013 season, as the team took the Anglers of the Year award for Campbell County High School.

However, on Saturday, the team found themselves battling something tougher than other fishermen.

 It’s sometimes difficult to swap directions in these parts. 

Many road signs are missing, GPS can be spotty and a few gravel roads aren’t found on any maps. 

My mammaw says, “if you don’t know where you’re going, you probably don’t need to be there.’” 

She’s a wise woman, but to be honest, Mammaw needs to get out more.
So for us trouble seekers and those with places to be, it’s important to have an agreed upon system to ease navigation. 

Free fishing day, June 8

Tennessee is hosting its annual free fishing day this weekend.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will allow fishing without a license in the public waters on Saturday, June 8.

The annual event is part of an effort aimed primarily at youngsters to increase interest in fishing in the state.

Children, ages 13 through 15, will able to fish without a license through June 14.

The Cougars have started summer ball, which most think will help the team’s chances in the 2014 campaign.

However, for Aaron Sanders and Jake Clowers, the day was infinitely harder during Saturday’s Student Anglers Federation’s Tennessee High School State Tournament.

“We had two or three big ones break off,” Sanders said. “It was devastating. We just said, ‘We’ll get the next one,’ and go on.
