Caryville to hire police officer

CARYVILLE— There’s an empty spot on the police force in Caryville after the resignation of officer Gary Johnson.
Johnson was hired last August at the same time as Mike Caudill, who was fired in December after giving his two-week’s notice. He now works with the Jacksboro Police Department.
“We just need to discuss hiring a police officer. Putting an ad in the paper and so forth,” said Caryville Mayor Chris Stanley.
Johnson moved on to another job, though Stanley did not give specifics on where he went.

 PIONEER—A Pioneer man was arrested Tuesday after police say he misidentified an alleged abduction suspect and fired at an innocent man.

On June 3, Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy Marty Blackwell responded to a suspicious vehicle call on Melvin Hollow Road.

A 6-year-old girl told officers a man in a dirty white van stopped and grabbed her hand. The child reportedly pulled away from the man and the van continued down Melvin Hollow Road toward Lowe Branch. 

Man sentenced to 90 days for...

After last month’s motion to dismiss charges, a LaFollette man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 90 days in the county jail.
Brian Keith Wilson, 43, was living too close to a park, school, head start and recreation center when he met with his probation officer on Aug. 3, 2012.
“It came to my attention that the address where Mr. Wilson was living since 2007 was too close to several things,” probation officer Sarah Dunn testified last month.
Wilson contended he had been given permission to live there by his former probation officer.

Duff arson likely retaliatory

 DUFF—An arson in the Duff community last Wednesday was likely retaliatory in nature, according to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Department. 

Just before 9 p.m. June 5, Deputy Ty Daugherty was on patrol in the area when he realized the home at 412 Duff Road was on fire. The back of the home was already engulfed, according to the report.

At the same time, a call came into the Campbell County E-911 center about an alleged drunk driver in LaFollette, who reportedly hit three vehicles, including a LaFollette Police Department cruiser.

CAMPBELL COUNTY—A LaFollette man was arraigned in Campbell County Criminal Court Monday on multiple charges filed against him during two separate incidents in April.
Dale Wilson, 629 Grantsboro Rd., LaFollette, answered to nine charges in criminal court where he entered not guilty pleas to each count.

CARYVILLE— The Board of Mayor and Aldermen hope to make some improvements along US 25W in Caryville.
The town plans to ask the Tennessee Department of Transportation about the feasibility of adding a right-turn lane from southbound 25W onto Elkins Road to assist with school traffic.
The town also hopes to see a traffic light installed at the intersection with Queener Road.
“We think traffic is gonna increase also with the new boat ramp,” said Mayor Chris Stanley.

EMS to offer training at East...

LaFOLLETTE—The city council will allow the Campbell County EMS to use a room at East LaFollette Community Center. Campbell County EMS hopes to offer first aid, CPR and other training to organizations in the community from the new site at East LaFollette.
 

Indian Mountain State Park pulls...

JELLICO—The pool at Indian Mountain State Park, in Jellico, is permanently closed.
“Tennessee State Parks’ operations staff made the decision to permanently close the swimming pool,” said Meg Lockhart, spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, in a Tuesday e-mail.
The pool was not being used enough and needed more than $70,000 worth of repairs, Lockhart said. She mentioned Kentucky Splash Park is 11 miles away, in Williamsburg, Ky,
