Kristin Chapman only knows winning.

For three straight years in high school, that was all she did, becoming Campbell County’s first three-time state champion.

Following her A-Sun indoor championship earlier in the year, Chapman did the same during the outdoor season, taking first in the high jump for East Tennessee State University.

Campbell County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ken Daugherty was dispatched to Rarity Mountain last Thursday after a cell phone tower maintenance crew called about a man on a motorcycle.
Michael Paul McGill, 32, of 948 Eslinger Court, Kodak, was headed south on Interstate 75 when he exited at Rarity Mountain and told four maintenance men that the Vigilantes motorcycle gang was chasing him and going to kill him, according to Daugherty.

Column: It takes discipline to...

As a baseball coach, something that I stress is having good plate discipline.

With good plate discipline, you as a hitter can control the at bat - don't give up anything to the pitcher that would otherwise be a ball.

Ball field receives $20,000 for...

Monday night, the Campbell County Commission approved spending $20,000 for additional grade work at a ball field in Jellico.

While the commission awarded the contract two months ago for $55,000, additional grade work was needed in the outfield, which was below the flood plain.

“There was some discrepancy in the engineering,” Jellico Mayor Les Stiers said.

Campbell County sophomore Michaela Smith and Cumberland Gap junior Rusty Provins will both be participating in the 2013 BlueCross Spring Fling in Murfreesboro, Tn.

MARKING MEMORIAL DAY: A tribute...

 If you’re out for a scenic drive this holiday weekend, head a few miles north of Caryville on Tenn. 116 near the intersection with Old Vasper Road. 

There, the otherwise curvy stretch of two-lane highway straightens out temporarily, before ducking under an aging railroad bridge.  

A weathered concrete wall meets a patch of grass planted with colorful silk flowers, small crosses and other lawn ornaments.

Relay for Life kicks off tomorrow

American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be at Jacksboro Middle School from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday. There will be much to see, hear and eat.
“We do have food (and) entertainment,” said Cyndi Russell, Relay for Life committee co-chair.

Smith to compete in State Championship

Michaela Smith took fourth place in the Sectional Tournament, qualifying her for a spot in the TSSAA State Championship. The sophomore will compete at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
